Senate

The Governing Body of the University

Senate is responsible for the ongoing strategic direction of the University, the management and administration of its revenue and property, and the general conduct of its affairs.

Senate Members

Members of Senate are drawn from the academic staff, support staff and student body of the University and includes a number of appointed external lay members. It normally meets four times a year, and receives reports from a range of committees.

Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Senate - Mr Stephen Prenter F.C.A.
Mr Stephen Prenter graduated from Queen’s with a degree in Economics, Business Studies and Accounting. In 1989, he was founding partner of BDO chartered accountants and business advisers and served as the firm’s Managing Partner for 19 years, retiring as Chairman in 2009.

He has been involved in strategic investment in Northern Ireland for many years and in the period 2006-2012, served as the University’s Honorary Treasurer.

He is currently a Business Director and Advisor, serving as a non-executive Director at Haldane Shiells Group Limited; a Director of the NI Growth Loan Fund; an elected Council member of Chartered Accountants Ireland; and Chairman of Belfast Grand Opera House Trust.

Stephen Kingon graduated from Queen's in 1968 with a BA degree. He joined Coopers and Lybrand in 1969 and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1972. By 1993, he was Managing Partner in charge of the Northern Ireland firm. In 1998 he became Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers following the merger of Coopers and Lybrand with Price Waterhouse until his retirement in 2007. Currently he is the Principal of Stephen Kingon Associates and holds several non-executive positions including Allied Irish Bank (UK) plc.

He is a former Chairman of Invest Northern Ireland; the Ulster Society of Chartered Accountants; Business in the Community and the Institute of Management Consultants. Currently he is Chairman of the NI Centre for Competiveness; Northern Ireland Electricity; the Balcas Group and the Lagan Group. Stephen also serves as a Belfast Harbour Commissioner.

Orla Corr Honorary Treasurer

Honorary Treasurer - Orla Corr OBE
Orla is the owner, Executive Chair and Business Development Director of The McAvoy Group Limited.

Orla graduated in 1988 with a BSc and Diploma in Accounting from Queen’s University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in 1992, where she worked for three years before joining the McAvoy Group as Financial Director.

In 2000, Orla was appointed Managing Director of the Group before choosing to concentrate on her real passion of business development and marketing in 2008. She assumed her current role as Executive Chair in June 2014.

In 2007, she became the first woman to be introduced into the Invest NI Entrepreneurial Hall of Fame in recognition of her business achievements within the McAvoy Group and in 2008 Orla became a finalist at the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Awards.

She is a past winner of the Women in Business NI’s Award for Entrepreneurship / Innovation and the Outstanding Business Woman of the Year, and holds the distinction of becoming the first Entrepreneur in Residence in the Leadership Institute at Queen’s University Belfast’s Management School.

Outside the McAvoy Group, Orla is a Director at The Odyssey Trust Company (OTC) which runs the highly successful Belfast’s Odyssey Complex. She is also Chair of OMC – Odyssey Millennium Ltd, OTC’s commercial trading company.

Orla received an OBE in 2011 for services to the construction industry in Northern Ireland.

Dr Dominic McSherry

Dr Dominic McSherry
Dominic McSherry is a former student of Queen’s University, having graduated with a BA (Hons) in Psychology in 1993 and PhD in 1998. He began working in Queen’s in 1999, first as a Research Assistant, progressing to Senior Research Fellow in 2005.

Dominic has developed an international reputation for his work in relation to children in care and adopted from care, and has attracted substantial external funding. He is currently leading a number of large-scale studies in this area (www.qub.ac.uk/cpo).

In terms of supporting the operation of the university, he is also a member of Academic Council, Academic Board, the Planning and Finance Committee, and the Honorary Degrees Committee. Dr Clare Dwyer
Clare Dwyer is a Lecturer and Assistant Director of Education in the School of Law. She currently teaches in the areas of Evidence, Criminal Justice and Penal Policy and is Programme Director for the Masters in Law & Masters in Legal Science. Her main research interests lie in the areas of penal policy, former prisoners and transitional justice, conflict transformation and young people, crime and justice.

Before joining Queen’s in January 2007, she was a Lecturer in Law at the Transitional Justice Institute, Ulster University. From 2002-2004, she worked as Projects Manager for a management and research consultancy which was engaged by the Department for International Development, World Bank and the United Nations. She was involved in projects reviewing and updating legislation in Kosovo, evaluating the Moldova Social Investment Fund and the Safety, Security and Access to Justice Programme (SSAJP) in Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro.

Clare serves as an Executive Board Member of the Committee on the Administration of Justice, a leading human rights organisation in Northern Ireland. She was elected to Senate in 2014, is a member of the Academic Council and the Institute of Professional Legal Studies’ Professional Standards Board.

Professor Michael J. Larkin

Professor Michael J. Larkin 

Currently Chair of Microbial Biochemistry, Mike has served Queen’s since 1980 and taught at all levels. He is past President and currently Vice-President of the University and Colleges Union (UCU) at Queen’s and serves on the UCU National Executive. He has served on international committees and editorial boards such as Senior Editor for Applied and Environmental Microbiology - an official journal of the American Society of Microbiology. He has served on committees of the UK research councils - BBSRC and NERC, and is Chair of the Queen’s University Environmental Science and Technology (QUESTOR) Centre.

He received a B.Sc. in Applied Biology (University of Hertfordshire) in 1977, and Ph.D. in Microbial Biochemistry (Cardiff University) in 1981. Professor Larkin is an expert on the molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry of microorganisms in the environment.

Dr Renee Prendergast

Dr Renee Prendergast
Renee Prendergast is a Reader in Economics in Queen’s University Management School with research interests in the history of economic thought and technology and development. She was elected to Senate by the academic staff of the University. She has been an officer of Queen’s UCU for several years and has served on its National Executive Committee and as its NI chair. She has been involved in the Queen’s gender initiative since its inception and is a member of its executive committee. She was a member of the steering committee for the NI Higher Education Strategy and a Board Member Economic Research Institute NI.

Eyad Abu-Khiran

Mr Eyad Abu-Khiran

Eyad currently works in Information Services as an Analyst/Programmer. He is a Trade Union Health and Safety Representative and has served as a branch officer for the University and College Union for a number of years. Eyad graduated with a first in Chemical Engineering from Jordan University in 1993. ‌During his PhD studies (1996-2000) he worked for various Schools and Directorates within Queen's. Eyad then changed his career to IT where he worked for RMA Systems and PwC until 2008, when he returned to Queen's.

Sean Fearon

Students’ Union President – Mr Seán Fearon

Seán took up his post as Students' Union President in July 2016.

Seán is from Dromintee, Armagh, and is a BA Politics, Philosphy and Economics (PPE) graduate from Queen's University Belfast.

In March 2016 Seán was elected President of Queen's University Belfast Students' Union after a year as Campaigns & Communications Officer. Committed to developing political activism among students and young people, Seán has organised campaigns on a variety of progressive social issues including climate change, voter registration, refugee solidarity and opposition to marketisation.

An advocate of the rights of student workers, in 2014 Seán worked in the Strategic Communications Department of the Labourer’s International Union of North America (LiUNA) as an intern in the Washington Ireland Program (WIP), and is an active member of NIPSA, seeking to build alliances between Students’ Unions and the local trade union movement. A supporter of direct action and radical campaign tactics, Seán was voted 'Activist of the Year' in the USI Student Achievement Awards 2016.

Ms Carol Kinkead

Ms Carol Kinkead
Carol spent the majority of her career in strategic management within the property and financial services sector. She is an experienced Board Member of over 15 years, holding key roles as Chair of Audit Risk and Governance, Chair of Development and Operations, Chair of Strategy, and Chair of Finance and Human Resources. She was Chair of one of the oldest Housing Associations in Northern Ireland, is a past Chair of Shelter Northern Ireland, and past Vice Chair of Northern Ireland Co-Ownership.

Her skills and expertise continue to be utilised at Board and Committee level in the Social Housing Sector within Oaklee Homes Group Limited.
Carol is a Non-Executive Director of Skainos, a Trustee of NIAMH (Northern Ireland Association Mental Health), Chair of Niamh’s External Affairs Committee and Chair of Convocation at Queen’s University.

Carol is a strong advocate of continuing personal and professional development, and believes that people at all levels of society should be encouraged, and supported, in improving their individual and collective potential. She strongly believes in the maximisation of all people to the well-being of communities, is vital, critical, and necessary to develop dynamic, vibrant and cohesive communities for the future.

Mr Eric Bell

Mr Eric Bell
Eric was the Senior Partner at Grant Thornton (Chartered Accountants) until 2004. He is a former chairman of the Institute of Directors in Northern Ireland and a number of other bodies.

Eric is a non-executive director of a number of Northern Ireland Companies, including United Dairy Farmers Limited Group, Northern Ireland Science Park, Ulster Independent Clinic, Turkington Holdings Group, and is Chair of Samuel Lamont Holdings Group. He also chairs a number of their Audit Committees.

Eric is a past President of Collegians RFC and is a current trustee of Belfast Harlequins. Eric was awarded an OBE in the 2003 Queen’s Birthday Honours list for his services to commerce and industry.

Mrs Lesley Bourke, LLB

Mrs Lesley Bourke, LLB
Lesley Bourke graduated from Queen’s in the mid 1980s with an LLB. After a period of private practice with S.J. Diamond & Sons Solicitors, she joined the then Northern Bank (now Danske Bank) as a member of the legal team. She progressed in the organisation, becoming Head of the Legal Department and Company Secretary to the Board in the late 1990's – a position she still holds today and which entails her providing legal and corporate governance advice to the Bank's Directors and senior management.

Lesley has been a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers since 2007, a Director of Cahoots NI Ltd, a not for profit theatre company, since 2003 and has served as Chair of that organisation since 2012. She has represented the University on the Council of Legal Education since 2009.

Mr Graham Cash

Mr Graham Cash
Graham Cash attended Queen’s University Belfast and obtained a First Class Honours Degree in Economics. He started his career at Price Waterhouse in Belfast in 1975 qualifying as a Chartered Accountant in 1979. He became a Partner in Coopers and Lybrand in August 1988. He remained a Partner in PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP with responsibility for Economics and Public Policy until his retirement in 2010.

He has served on various Committees of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. He was also involved in a variety of large and high profile economic development strategies, policy and programme evaluations and economic appraisals. He was a long standing Council member of the CBI Northern Ireland and also served for a number of years on the Joint Cross Border Business Committee of CBI/IBEC.

He has been a member of Senate for over 4 years and also serves on a number of sub committees. He is a member of the QUBIS Ltd Development Fund Investment Committee.

Mr Adrian Doran

Mr Adrian Doran
Adrian Doran was appointed Head of Corporate Banking for Barclays in Northern Ireland in October 2000, and since then has been responsible for advising some of NI’s largest companies on their financing and banking arrangements. Adrian is a qualified chartered accountant who trained with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers), before spending four years in Bank of Ireland.

Adrian has significant experience of financial control, governance, mergers and acquisitions and strategic planning. He is a member of the CBI Council in Northern Ireland and a member of its Improving Infrastructure Committee. He is a past Examiner for the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland and previously served on the Institute’s Member Services Committee.

Mrs Sheila Fleming-Mitchell

Mrs Sheila Fleming-Mitchell
Sheila Fleming-Mitchell has over 25 years’ experience in Human Resources and Organisation Development and has worked at regional, national and international level across a range of sectors - financial services, legal, public sector and ICT.

Her early years were spent in retail and public sector, before joining Deloitte Haskins and Sells in 1989, which later merged with Coopers and Lybrand. She moved to LEDU in 1991, as a Business Envelopment Executive, providing a range of financial and organisation development solutions for the SME sector. In 1997, she joined the senior management team of a start-up company, Liberty Information Technology, which has grown to become a major player in the NI ICT market, growing to revenues of £30m and employing over 350 staff, in just over 17 years. She stood down from the role in 2012 to take up a variety of consulting roles in the IT sector.

She is a committee member of the Northern Ireland Appeals Advisory Committee, more commonly known as Children in Need, with responsibility for policy making for broadcast appeals and grant allocations for a range of voluntary and community initiatives and programmes, aimed at providing support for disadvantaged children. Other committee memberships include, Board member of East Belfast Enterprise, which is the lead Enterprise Development Agency in the east of the city, and is a former member of the CBI NI Employment Affairs Committee.

Ms Marion Matchett

Ms Marion Matchett
Marion was Chief Inspector of the Education and Training Inspectorate from 2000-08, responsible for the management and governance of the inspection arrangements which underpinned the provision of inspection services and published reports for all pre-school, primary, secondary, special, youth, and further and teacher education institutions in Northern Ireland.

She was a member of the Executive Board of the Department of Education and a member of the Top Management Group charged with the monitoring and management of performance across the Department. Following devolution, she also reported on the quality of education and training provision to the Executive Boards of the Department for Employment and Learning and the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure.

Since retiring from the Inspectorate in 2008 she has been appointed to the position of Civil Service Commissioner for Northern Ireland. She is also an independent member of the Honours Education Committee in London and was a participant in the Cabinet Office Top Management Programme.

Mrs Ann McGregor

Mrs Ann McGregor
Ann McGregor is currently Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry. She was formerly Chief Executive of Enterprise NI and a Director with Business in the Community having commenced her career in industry in a range of production management roles.

Ann is a MCIM member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing. She is a Trustee of the Grand Opera House, serving as a member of the Finance and Audit Sub-Committees, a member of the Global Accreditation Board for British Chambers network and a former Director of Young Enterprise having served as a member of the Strategy and Policy Group.

In 2013, Ann was appointed by NI Ministers – Arlene Foster and Simon Hamilton, as one of three panel members to the Economic Advisory Group ‘Access to Finance’ Implementation Panel to oversee the implementation of recommendations in the EAG Access to Finance Report.

In June 2012, Ann received an MBE for services to small business development and enterprise.

Mr Alan Shannon

Mr Alan Shannon
Alan Shannon retired in May 2013 after 42 years in the Northern Ireland Civil Service, serving as a Permanent Secretary in the Department for Employment and Learning from 1999-2003 and again from 2010-2013, and in the Department for Social Development from 2003-10. He previously spent 12 years in the Northern Ireland Office dealing with policing, probation, juvenile justice, prisons and corporate services. In 1985 he conducted an efficiency scrutiny into the health service on behalf of the Prime Minister’s efficiency advisor. From 1982-85 he was first attaché to the British Member at the European Court of Auditors in Luxembourg.

Alan is currently chair of the Northern Ireland Federation of Housing Associations, chair of the Northern Ireland Advisory Committee of Marie Curie, a member of the Board of Trustees of Marie Curie, the senior director on the Board of Civil Service Healthcare and a member of the Advisory Panel on de-regulation established by the Minister of Enterprise, Trade and Investment. He recently stepped down from the NI advisory board of the British Council.

Alan was awarded a CB in 2012.

Dr Declan Tiernan

Dr Declan Tiernan
Dr Declan Tiernan is Managing Director and is responsible for European and Middle East investment product marketing and client coverage at Oak Hill Advisors, a $29bn alternative credit manager. Prior to joining Oak Hill Advisors, Declan was Managing Director and Head of Alternative Fund Distribution at UBS Investment Bank. He has been employed in the financial services sector for 19 years and has previously held similar roles at Deutsche Bank and HSBC where he was responsible for marketing structured and alternative credit products to European and Middle Eastern investors. Prior to this, he was Head of Structured Products at National Commercial Bank in Saudi Arabia.

Declan holds a B.Sc. (Hons) First Class in Applied Mathematics & Physics (1992), a PhD in Theoretical Physics (1996) from Queen’s University, was a QUB Foundation Scholar (1992) and was awarded the Purser Scholarship for advanced mathematical study for four years between 1992-1996. Declan was also awarded the David Bates Prize for Applied Mathematics in 1992. As a Member of Senate, he sits on the University’s Planning and Finance Committee, having previously sat on the Honorary Degrees Committee from 2010-2013. Declan chairs the QUB City Leadership Group, a London based network of alumni and friends, which since its establishment, has locally co-ordinated fundraising for various university projects, as well as arranging work placements in financial services and law for over 150 Queen's students.

Dr Michael Wardlow

Dr Michael Wardlow
Dr Michael Wardlow has been Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission since March 2013. In September 2009, Michael established a freelance consultancy, specialising in assisting organisations, nationally or internationally based, which are working in the area of citizenship education; cohesion; integration; peace building; and reconciliation.

Prior to that, he had served in a variety of positions including Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Ireland Council for Integrated Education, Development Secretary for the European YMCA, Director of Training for Irish YMCA and Insurance Surveyor and Underwriter.

In the past decade, Michael has spoken at a variety of international reconciliation and education events and has carried out a number of evaluations of peace building projects in Europe, Asia and Africa. He continues to be involved in reconciliation and peace building work, both at home and on a wider scale, through his membership of various committees, both locally and nationally.

Michael holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Queen’s University Belfast and recently completed a Doctorate in Education at Queen’s. He is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute. He is married with two children and lives in Dundonald.
