Key Programme Information
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
The research aims of the School are to conduct high-quality, fundamental studies of value to international industries and to prepare research students for employment in these industries. Staff have strong relationships with international industry and with other leading institutions.
Research is split across three clusters:
- Advanced Materials and Processing
- Aerospace and Manufacturing
- Clean Energies
The Advanced Materials and Processing cluster undertakes leading-edge, multidisciplinary research into the processing, modelling and development of high-performance materials across a broad range of applications.
The Aerospace and Manufacturing cluster has expertise in digital manufacturing, modelling and simulation, composites and modelling of complex systems.
The focus of research within the Clean Energies group is mostly in the areas of Modelling and Simulation, After-treatment, Turbomachinery and Energy from Waste, but does include other projects and applications associated with energy efficiency and thermal management.
The major strength of the research within the School is the applied nature and industrial relevance of the work. The School has long standing collaborations with major multinational companies in the aerospace, automotive, polymer processing, medical device and packaging sectors.
A research degree offers you the opportunity to develop your research skills and prove yourself as a researcher. Queen's is committed to the enhancement of research training and teaching and offers postgraduate research opportunities across all fields of study. The following postgraduate research study routes for this subject area are:
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
- Master of Philosophy (MPhil)
The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Further information can be obtained by contacting the School.
Mode of study/Duration
Registration is on a full-time or part-time basis, under the direction of a supervisory team appointed by the University. You will be expected to submit your thesis at the end of three years of full-time registration for PhD, or two years for MPhil/MD (or part-time equivalent).
