Overview

The School of Pharmacy focuses its research activities on key areas of the pharmaceutical sciences and clinical and primary care aspects of pharmacy. Our research spans a wide range of scientific and professional disciplines. It is characterised by being multidisciplinary, internationally-connected and, ultimately, relevant to patients. The School is the No 1 ranked Pharmacy School in the UK for 'Pharmacology and Pharmacy' (The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2016).

Additionally, the School achieved an excellent result in REF 2014, we have 92 per cent of our research falling within the highest quality 4* and 3* categories. We are now one of the leading centres for pharmaceutical research in the UK. The School is committed to research excellence. This is achieved through continual review of research standards, strategic recruitment and development of external and internal collaborations. The School has a a broad portfolio of high quality research income and School staff publish widely in leading journals and present their work at national and international conferences.

 

Research Strengths

Pharmacy at Queen's has a large and expanding research portfolio grouped  according to research themes under the cross-disciplinary over-arching Pioneer Research Programme led by the School of Pharmacy:

Pharmaceutical sciences and practice research is housed in the School's state-of-the-art, purpose-built McClay Research Centre and adjacent facilities on the Health Sciences campus. Our world-class laboratories include recently-opened new facilities for pharmaceutical biotechnology and medicinal chemistry, and our well-equipped Pharmacy Practice Research Unit provides excellent facilities for practice-related research. Specific training in research methodologies is provided for all postgraduate research students.

Entry Requirements

A research degree offers you the opportunity to develop your research skills and prove yourself as a researcher. Queen's is committed to the enhancement of research training and teaching and offers postgraduate research opportunities across all fields of study. The following postgraduate research study routes for this subject area are:

  • Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
  • Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

Entrance Requirements

The minimum academic requirement for admission to a research degree programme is normally an Upper Second Class Honours degree from a UK or ROI HE provider, or an equivalent qualification acceptable to the University. Further information can be obtained by contacting the School.

Mode of study/Duration

Registration is on a full-time or part-time basis, under the direction of a supervisory team appointed by the University. You will be expected to submit your thesis at the end of three years of full-time registration for PhD, or two years for MPhil/MD (or part-time equivalent).

English Language Requirements

International students (where English is not their first language), must be able to demonstrate their proficiency in English. Non-EEA nationals must also satisfy UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) immigration requirements for English language for visa purposes. Evidence of an IELTS* score of 6.0, with not less than 5.5 in any component (*taken within the last 2 years) is required.
