An Oxford undergraduate, Matt Nichols came to Queen’s to study for his PhD under Professor Stephen Smartt.

“We were studying a type of extremely rare superluminous supernova explosion. Many of the most important results in this area have come from the research group at Queen's.”

In 2015, Matt was awarded The ‘Michael Penston Prize’, The Royal Astronomical Society’s Prize for Best Thesis, a UK-wide prize for the best thesis in astronomy or astrophysics in a given year.
