The projection of the Science Fiction classic GATTACA will be followed by an interactive panel discussion between Postdoctoral Researchers from Queen's University Belfast and the audience.
Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law star in this engrossing sci-fi thriller about an all-too-human man who dares to defy a system obsessed with genetic perfection.
Hawke stars as Vincent, an “In-Valid” who assumes the identity of a member of the genetic elite to pursue his goal of traveling into space with the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation. However, a week before his mission, a murder marks Vincent as a suspect. With a relentless investigator in pursuit and the colleague he has fallen in love with beginning to suspect his deception, Vincent’s dreams steadily unravel.
Has science caught up with fiction? Do we now know the precise make up of our genes? Could this be used to improve our lives? Stay on after the film for a discussion with some of QUB’s postdoctoral researchers and get the answer to these questions and more.
This event is organised by QFT and the Postdoctoral Development Centre of Queen’s University Belfast, as part of National Postdoc Appreciation Week (16-20 September 2019).
