Welcome to AURIL
Annual Conference Newcastle 2010
AURIL, the premier knowledge transfer association in the UK and biggest in Europe, are delighted to announce the programme for its 2010 Conference held this year at the Assembly Rooms in Newcastle on Thursday 7 and Friday 8 October. The conference will commence at 9.30am on Thursday and will finish with lunch on Friday at 1.30pm.The public sector is going through difficult times and the budget has already announced some savage cuts with more undoubtedly to come in the autumn spending review. AURIL recognises that the products, the type of services we offer and how we do business will change. But, our sector has always prided itself on flexibility and being able to adapt to changing circumstances and I am sure we will meet these new challenges face on. The KT sector not only helps stimulate growth but produces lasting long term benefit to the economy and society.
The sector has a critical role to play in the coming years. The research generated by our institutions is world class and should be put to good use so IMPACT is high on the agenda. This conference will hear the inside views of major stakehoders, funders and opinion makers on how the future landscape might look but we will also hear from our colleagues with good practice case studies on how they have dealt with the operational issues surrounding recent initiatives.
To see more of what's on offer, download the Conference Programme. To book your place at the conference, please complete a Booking Form and return it to Katie Fleming (k.fleming@qub.ac.uk). We look forward to seeing you next month! Don't miss out.

- NESTA: The Future Of Innovation... Is Together
Let's ignore the difficulties and problems of collaboration for now. There are many factors driving businesses large and small towards corporate open innovation (COI) at the dawn of the 21st century: Innovation is expensive and outsourcing promises lower overheads; Innovation is now global and even the largest multinational corporations (MNCs) realise that their knowledge has limits;
- NESTA: Doing the business
The UK government has increasingly expected universities to develop stronger links with business. Such links are believed to contribute to innovation and economic growth, particularly regionally. Targeted funding by the Higher Education Funding Council for England has been provided to encourage innovative business links, which are often characterised by the development of specialist ‘knowledge transfer’ offices.
- Service to Society: wider public benefits of HE
Following a recommendation in the November 2008 Wellings Review of IP, HEFCE working with UniversitiesUK and volunteer HEIs, have been piloting reporting of the wider public benefits of higher education to the economy and society.
- Public service delivery and the third sector
This paper examines research evidence, argument and policy development on the third sector and public service delivery over the last five to ten years. Forty-eight separate pieces of research, published between 2004 and 2010 on the themes of public service delivery, commissioning and procurement, are reviewed.
- The geography of social enterprise
Social enterprise has attracted increasing attention from policy makers, practitioners and academics over recent years. It has often been argued that there is a strong geographical dimension to the growth of social enterprise, yet the lack of reliable national data has prevented any rigorous analysis into how they are distributed.
