General research topics of the laboratory:

General description of research on brown trout population genetics:
A major research topic of our laboratory is the conservation and management of native brown trout populations. In particular, we study the population structure of Spanish brown trout populations, the distribution of genetic variation within and between populations and the effects of hatchery-outplants on those populations. Another important topic is the phylogeography of brown trout since we depend on correct identification of the autochthonous form for the study of interactions between introduced and native trout.

Protein electrophoresis is the major molecular tool employed in these studies. MtDNA D-LOOP sequencing has been started recently.

Source of project funding: I.N.I.A. (Spanish National Institution for Research on Agriculture).
Topic: Gene diversity, Stocking effects, Stocking efficiency.
Objective: To study ecological and genetical variables involved in population biology of brown trout in Central Spain. Identification of past stocking activities.
Design: Streams in Central Spain are genetically screened and ecological monitored during periods of two-three years.
Methodology: Protein electrophoresis, mtDNA-RFLP.
Trout population: Resident population (& Hatchery stock).
Origin of samples: Spain, South Atlantic  (& Atlantic Basin).
Status: Started in Jan. 1995, ongoing.

Topic: Gene diversity, Stocking effects, Stocking efficiency.
Objective: To study genetic structure and microdifferentiation among eastern Pyrenees trout populations. To assess genetic impact of hatchery reared fish on native populations.
Design: Genetic survey of trout populations in protected, fished and stocked areas.
Methodology: Protein electrophoresis
Trout population: Resident population (& Hatchery stock).
Origin of samples: Spain (Mediterranean Sea Basin, Atlantic Basin).
Status: Started in 1996 as part of Miss Sanz PhD thesis, ongoing.
