WOMEN
MEMBERS OF IRISH COUNTY COUNCILS
Table
1 lists all women county councillors in Ireland by party: Fianna
Fáil, Fine Gael, Labour, Progressive
Democrat, and smaller parties and Independents.
There are few women in leadership roles in local government; county mayors
and council chairpersons are marked below with an asterisk. Table
2 shows the number of women returned to each county council at the
time of the last election, and Table 3 shows what proportion
of each party's successful candidates were women. Note that not all of
the numbers will correspond with the numbers of women in Table 1 as some
women have left or been co-opted to councils since then. The 134 women
elected to county and city councils in 1999 was an improvement on the
1991 figure of 103 and almost double the number elected in 1985. Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown
has achieved the most impressive balance, with 36 per cent women, while
Westmeath is the most imbalanced council. Unlike
Northern Ireland none of the republic's councils are women-free zones,
though in 2001 Northern Ireland scored a higher overall average. Figures
