ARCHIVE UK WOMEN CANDIDATES FOR THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT JUNE 2004

Table 1 provides a breakdown of each party’s candidates by gender, and Table 2 lists all women candidates by party; parties not presently represented in the European Parliament are classed as ‘Other’. Labour and Liberal Democrats both lead the way with nearly half of their candidates being women. The UK is divided into twelve regions which elect between four and twelve MEPs, for a total of eighty-seven. Next to each candidates’ name is their rank in the party list; those ranked first or second stand the best chance of winning election.

At the last election 27 per cent of the UK’s MEPs were women, a figure comparable to the present nominations. The sixteen incumbents standing again are marked below with an asterisk (six Labour, four Lib Dems, three Conservatives, two Greens and one Plaid Cymru). There is one standing down at this election (Labour veteran Imelda Read). The Observatory also has pages on all former British women MEPs, and Irish candidates in this election.

Candidates’ names have been obtained from the BBC News website.
