Curious Doings with
We Are Not Afraid
Curious Doings was the company formed from the pilot of a brand new postgraduate performer training programme.
The course aimed to produce rounded reflective practitioners who, in addition to developing traditional performance skills, have the ability to create performance, event, entertainment in a broader sense. Much of the course focused on devised work and had an ensemble ethos.
WE ARE NOT AFRAID was the final production coming out of a module called SPECIAL PROJECT: AN EXPEDITION INTO UNKNOWN TERRITORIES. This module was designed to introduce students to ways of creating performance and thinking about creating performance that are different from those that they may have previously experienced.
The Curious Doings company of 19 and their directors spent two days with Richard Lowdon and Claire Marshall from Sheffield-based Forced Entertainment - a group of six artists based in Sheffield who make performances as well as projects in other media and contexts.
The Guardian newspaper has called Forced Entertainment "Britain's most brilliant experimental theatre company" and their work varies from projects that are very brash and theatrical to other works that are very minimal and text-based. In everything they do they are trying to find ways to talk about contemporary experience, and to create exciting and intimate encounters with audiences. Since Forced Entertainment started in 1984 they have presented their projects all over mainland Europe and much further afield.
After two days of exploring new performance-making strategies and ideas, the Curious Doings company and their directors continued to play on their own for a further 10 days resulting in this experimental devised piece, which played to full houses.
