‘What do “Young Irelanders” and “New Kids on the Block” have in common?’

Professor Karen Corrigan and Dr Adam Mearns (Newcastle University)

The 15th Literature of Irish Exile Autumn School

Saturday 18th October 2014

Migration to and from Northern Ireland has had a profound impact on language, from the arrival of Celtic speaking peoples 2,500 years ago to the most recent wave of immigration, particularly from Eastern Europe, in the twenty- first century.
Professor Karen Corrigan and Dr Adam Mearns explore the social, cultural and linguistic impact of Northern Ireland's changing population. It compares the experiences of recent immigrants with those of Irish emigrants who fled the country also in response to historical conflicts, famine and economic depression.
