Criteria for Admissions

There is no direct entry to this programme.

In the event that a student has been unable to successfully complete year 3 of the BSc (Hons) Nursing or BSc (Hons) Midwifery Sciences the student may request to be considered for the exit award of Diploma in Healthcare Sciences. To be considered for the exit award of the Diploma the student must have accrued 120 credit points at level 1 and 120 credit points at level 2 from the BSc (Hons) Nursing or the BSc (Hons) Midwifery Sciences programme. Students may have been previously apeled for level 1 modules.

Additional Relevant Information
Students on the BSc (Hons) Nursing programme have the opportunity to choose to undertake an elective clinical placement outside Northern Ireland.

All students will have access to a personal tutor throughout their programme. In clinical placement they will be supported by a clinical mentor/sign off mentor midwife and have access to a link lecturer.

Programme Specific Regulations

Awards, Credits and Progression of Learning Outcomes

Attendance


Students must attend 75% of timetabled classes for all theory modules. Students who fail to satisfy the attendance requirements will be referred to the Programme Co-ordinator and if their absence is deemed to compromise satisfactory completion of the programme, they may be referred to the Board of Examiners for consideration. 100% attendance in practice is mandatory. At the discretion of the Programme Co-ordinator and subject to the paragraph below, students will normally have the opportunity to compensate for practice missed through absence or illness or other recognised extenuating circumstances.

Assessment

Students must complete all assessed components which contribute towards the final summative mark for the module.

Students must complete all modules and achieve satisfactory performance in all compulsory elements. The pass mark for all modules is 40% unless otherwise stated.

Progress

Students whose progress appears to be unsatisfactory at any stage of their studies, who are absent from a University examination for a reason not approved by the School, or who record two absent medicals for an assessable component of the programme will be considered by the Board of Examiners.


A student on temporary withdrawal shall return to the programme at the point where they were last deemed competent. Programme providers must ensure that the student’s acquired knowledge and skills remain valid to enable the completion of the competencies set by the NMC. In conjunction with their personal tutor and programme co-ordinator, an orientation plan will be developed to ensure a smooth return to clinical and academic learning.

A student who has taken a temporary withdrawal will be required to complete a self-declaration form prior to return to the programme, declaring any criminal record they may have attracted during absence.

Students must successfully complete all year 1 modules and achieve satisfactory performance in all compulsory elements before progressing from year 1 to year 2.

The award of the Diploma in Healthcare Sciences will be dependent on the student achieving the following:

- Satisfactory completion of all modules/ components in Year 1 and Year 2

- Satisfactory attendance.

The Diploma may be awarded with High Commendation to those students who in Year 2 of the Programme:

-Pass all modules and satisfy all compulsory elements; and

- Achieve an average mark of 70 % or above.

The Diploma may be awarded with Commendation to those students who in Year 2 of the Programme:

- Pass all modules and satisfy all compulsory elements; and

- Achieve an average mark of 60%.

This programme includes practical and clinical elements where patient safety must be the primary consideration.

Applications will be considered on an individual basis and in conjunction with professional guidelines, Occupational Health and Disability Services.

EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF PROGRAMME

The overall aim of this programme is to offer a high quality teaching and learning environment in the provision of a high quality education programme for undergraduate nursing students that meets current NMC recommendations. On successful completion of this programme students will be able to:
