Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships

New for 2011 entry

The University is pleased to announce its participation in the Eliahou Dangoor Scholarships Scheme.  Launched in December 2009, this new Scheme aims to offer crucial financial support to UK students from underprivileged backgrounds.

The Scheme has been established following a generous donation of £3 million by Dr Naim Dangoor, a 95 year old property tycoon who fled to Britain to escape anti-Semitic persecution in Iraq.  Dr Dangoor studied engineering at the University of London in the 1930s and has said that the money was his way of repaying the gratitude he felt to the UK for his education. The Scholarship has been named in memory of Dr Dangoor’s father.

Through the Scheme, the University will be able to offer approximately 30 full-time scholarships of £1,000 to new first year students entering in September 2011 to undertake a STEM subject degree programme – i.e. degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Students who meet the following criteria will be eligible for consideration:

  • Students commencing their first year of undergraduate study from September 2011.
  • Students undertaking a degree programme in a STEM subject and enrolled on a course in one of the following Schools:

Architecture, Planning and Civil Engineering (Civil Engineering Courses only)
    Biological Sciences
    Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
    Mathematics and Physics
    Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences (Biomedical Sciences courses only)
  • UK domiciled students liable to pay tuition fees.
  • Students in receipt of a University Institutional Bursary.

Students meeting the above criteria and who are also admitted with the highest academic attainment at A-Level (or equivalent), up to the maximum number of awards available under the Scheme, will be awarded a Dangoor Scholarship.  Successful students will be selected automatically by the University and will receive their award at the University's annual Scholarships Awards Ceremony in Semester 2.  The Dangoor Scholarship is tenable with any other award.
