Keynote address 'Auditing assessment' - Abstract of address:

In this session we'll look at how we can interrogate our assessment processes and instruments to help us to make them fit for purpose. We will also be thinking about how best we can make assessment more manageable, both for us and for students. Presently, too often assessment tends to get in the way of learning, and we need to make it a more positive enhancement to learning. Perhaps we assess far too much, and yet don't do it well enough? We need assessment to be valid, reliable, transparent to students, and authentic, and factors such as these will be the starting point for our 'auditing' of how we assess.

About Phil Race

Phil Race works on both sides of the teaching-learning equation; working with students to develop their learning skills, and working with staff to develop their teaching methods and approaches. He is also particularly interested in the design of assessment instruments and processes, and is keen that both assessment and feedback should play positive and motivating roles in student learning. He is known for getting even large audiences to do things with post-its and flipcharts during interactive workshop sessions!

Currently, he works part-time in the Staff and Departmental Development Unit at the University of Leeds, and for the rest of his time runs interactive training workshops for staff and students in universities, colleges and other organisations throughout the UK and abroad.
