Application guidelines: Queen's Nominee Selection

Applying to be a Queen’s Nominee to the National Teaching Fellowship Scheme Individual Awards 2011 (NTFS)

Queen's University has been invited to nominate up to three individuals who can demonstrate excellence in supporting the student learning experience in higher education to the NTFS Individual Awards 2011.

The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme for Individuals Awards aims to:

  • raise the profile of learning and teaching
  • recognise and celebrate individuals who make an outstanding impact on the student learning experience
  • provide a national focus for institutional teaching and learning excellence schemes.

Up to 55 individual awards, each of £10,000, will be awarded in 2011 in recognition of individual excellence.  The  award is intended to support the National Teaching Fellow's professional development in teaching and learning pedagogy.  The award must be spent in a three year period and individuals are required to produce a report on the way the award has been spent and its impact before the end of this period.

Colleagues wishing to be considered for one of the nominations should submit an electronic application by 4 pm on Wednesday 16 February 2011 to Liz McDowell at e.mcdowell@qub.ac.uk.

Applications should comprise a Claim for Fellowship (maximum 5000 words) and a brief Curriculum Vitae (maximum 1500 words)  Further details are given below.

Claim for Fellowship

The Claim for Fellowship should be a statement of how you demonstrate excellence relevant to each of the following criteria.  You should address and make a claim for each criterion in turn.  Each of the three criteria will be given equal consideration in the assessment process.

1. Individual Excellence

Evidence of enhancing and transforming the student learning experience commensurate with your context and the opportunities afforded by it.  This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing evidence of:

(a) stimulating students' curiosity and interest in ways which inspire a commitment to learning,

(b) organising and presenting high quality resources in coherent and imaginative ways which in turn clearly enhance students' learning,

(c) recognising and actively supporting the full diversity of student learning needs,

(d) drawing upon the results of relevant research, scholarship and professional practice in ways which add value to teaching  and students' learning,

(e) engaging with and contributing to the established literature or to your own evidence base for teaching and learning.

2. Raising the profile of excellence

Evidence of supporting colleagues and influencing support for student learning; demonstrating impact and engagement beyond your immediate academic or professional role.  This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing evidence of:

(a) making outstanding contributions to colleagues' professional development in relation to promoting and enhancing student learning,

(b) contributing to departmental/faculty/institutional/national initiatives to facilitate student learning,

(c) contributing to and/or supporting meaningful and positive change with respect to pedagogic practice, policy and/or procedure.

3. Developing excellence

Evidence of commitment to your ongoing professional development with regard to teaching and learning and/or learning support.   This may, for example, be demonstrated by providing evidence of:

(a) ongoing review and enhancement of individual professional practice,

(b) engaging in professional development activities which enhance your expertise in teaching and learning support,

(c) engaging in the review and enhancement of one's own professional and/or academic practice,

(d)  specific contributions to significant improvements in the student learning experience.

Curriculum Vitae

The CV should focus on your experience and outputs with a view to demonstrating a robust commitment to enhancing and supporting student learning and delivering or facilitating teaching excellence.

Assistance will be given to the selected nominees to finalise and format their applications before submission to the NTFS for their deadline in March.  Details of the NTFS 2011 can be accessed at the HE Academy's website.
