Introduction to Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs)
The UK Border Agency requires international students in the UK to apply for identity cards as part of their visa extension application. The identity card is known as a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP). You will need to visit the UK Border Agency office in Belfast where you will have your fingerprints taken and a biometric face scan. There will no longer be a sticker (vignette) in your pasport for student extensions as this will be replaced by the BRP.
The identity card is VERY important. You will always need to carry your passport and BRPwhen you travel. You are not required to carry your identity card at all times in the UK although you may be asked to produce it during your stay in the UK to prove your entitlement to study or work. YOU MUST KEEP YOUR BRP SAFE.
There is no charge for issuing your BRP, however, should you lose or damage your card you will have to pay for a replacement.
Going for your biometric appointment is an extra step in the visa extension application process and you should allow some extra time for your application to be processed.
How do I apply for a BRP?
When you apply for your visa extension a letter will be sent to you asking you to make an appointment to give your biometric data. You must follow the guidance in the letter and make an appointment as quickly as possible. After you have attended your appointment your BRP will be sent to you by secure postal delivery if your visa application is successful.
Do my dependants also need to apply for a BRP?
If you have family members in the UK on student dependant visa/s they will also need to apply for a BRP on their visa extension application form and visit the office to give fingerprints and a biometric face scan. Children under the age of six only need to have a biometric face scan (photograph) taken and are not required to give fingerprints. Children over six must give fingerprints and a biometric face scan.
How will premium same day applications be affected?
If you decide to apply for a visa extension in person your fingerprints and biometric scan will be taken at the same appointment. You will then need to wait about ten days for the card to arrive before you travel, unless you have special circumstances.
