Widening Participation Unit

Queen's has a long tradition of attracting students from a wide variety of backgrounds. This tradition has been re-affirmed in the University's Access Agreement, whereby the University has pledged to provide additional financial support to students from households with lower income. Such students will be eligible for assistance from Queen's new bursary scheme.

Additionally, the University has established a Widening Participation Unit with the purpose of raising aspirations of those from backgrounds where attendance at University is not usual. The Widening Participation Unit actively works with schools, both secondary and primary, across Northern Ireland to reach out to pupils from low participation backgrounds.

A well recognised and highly valued outreach programme is Discovering Queen's which attracts some 2000 pupils from non-selecting secondary schools to Queen's each year to take part in a wide range of 'taster' events.
