Research Computing

The research support section of Information Services provides access to a range of computing facilities for researchers’. The services and facilities are available are summarised in the following sections.

  • Research Resource Centre
    The Research Resource Centre provides staff and postgraduate students with access to hardware and software not generally available in Schools. Information on the hardware and software available can be accessed via the Information Services website or by selection the options below:
  • Large-scale computing systems
    Research Computing provides access to two large-scale computing systems that can be used to assist with research. Information on the systems available can be accessed via the Information Services website or by selection the options below:
    • Sun Research System: The Sun Research System is a Unix system running the Sun Solaris version of Unix. Information on accessing and using the system can be found on the Information Services website or by clicking here.
    • HP Itanium II Cluster: The HP Itanium II Cluster forms part of Information Services support for high performance computing. The system is central to the evaluation of developing a campus GRID to support the computing needs of researchers’. Information on accessing and using the system can be found on the Information Services website or by clicking here.
  • Large scale plotting
    • Hewlett Packard 5500PS: This is a high quality colour design jet plotter, located in the main Computer Lab at University Computing Services. Access to the plotter can be obtained either from University Computing Services Helpdesk or via a Computer Assistant in the SCCs. A charge is levied for use of this equipment.
    • HP4500N Laser Printer: The HP4500N laser printer has a resolution of 600 d.p.i. and can be used to produce plots on A4 paper and transparencies. The printer is located in the Research Resource Centre. A charge is levied for use of this equipment.
  • Web hosting
    The main University web site is hosted on a Sun Solaris UNIX system running Apache. Schools and Research groups are welcome to use this system to host their site – contact: webmaster@qub.ac.uk

    The University has recently purchased a site license for the Site Manager Content Management System. This enables non-technical users to publish web pages in a given style. The University is seeking to increase the uptake of this system among the different user groups. Those interested in evaluating the possible use of the system should contact: cmst4@qub.ac.uk
