The University was conferred with the first Silver Athena SWAN University award in May 2007 and this has been retained in the latest SWAN awards in 2015.

In May 2015 the Athena SWAN Charter was expanded to include Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Business and Law. Two of Queen's AHSS schools were successful in gaining a Bronze Award. This brings the total number of QUB departmental awards to 12 (2 Gold, 8 Silver and 2 Bronze).
