General Language Courses (LNS)

What is the Language for Non-Specialists programme?
It is language Classes offered by the University Language Centre in a number of languages and at a variety of levels. The language taught is of a practial nature. The courses allow for progression from one level to the next, while not precluding first admission above the lowest level.

Classes, which usually last two hours, are held weekly, as far as possible outside normal university teaching hours (e.g. late afternoon, early evening or Wednesday afternoon) and run for 16 weeks starting in October (early enrolment is recommended).

We offer over 20 languages at a variety of levels including Arabic, Bengali, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, Greek (Modern), Polish, Portuguese, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian, Sign Language, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ulster Scots and Urdu

Accreditation
A Queen's Certificate will be awarded to all students who attend regularly, that is, 70% attendance. All Language for Non-Specialist courses now count towards the University's Degree Plus Award.

Cost
All course fees are payable on enrolment.  There are different fees depending upon course and your registration type, that is, QUB student or staff, or member of the public.  For further information on current fees please click on the links below.

How do I enrol?
Enrol online and pay for your course using a credit or debit card.  It is imperative that you only register yourself for a course.  If you purchase a course for an acquaintance then that person will not be fully registered.  Their name will not appear on the class register and they will not receive emails providing information about the course. 

Note: Courses will only run if there is sufficient demand. Some courses will require a textbook.

When can I enrol?
Language Centre courses run twice per year starting in October and February.  Enrolment is available online from the August and November preceding the course start date.  Early enrolment is recommended as courses are popular and often fill up quickly.
