Learning Objectives
Students taking the level 1 course are not expected to have any previous knowledge of the language. The aim of level 1 is to introduce students to the language, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at an essential level in a target language context.

Learning Objectives
Students taking the level 2 course should either have completed level 1, or have only a basic previous knowledge of the language. The aim of level 2 is to develop basic language skills, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at a post-beginners level in a target language context.

Students taking the level 7 course should either have completed an A-level examination in the subject, completed level 6 here at Queen’s, or have an equivalent knowledge of the Language. The aim of level 7 is to develop high level language skills, more in-depth cultural awareness and strong grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their ability to express themselves relatively fluently and to communicate with relative ease in a working environment.

Environment e.g. pollution, energy, protecting the planet; The multicultural society e.g. immigration (le monde francophone, DOMTOM, enlarged EU) integration, racism; Contemporary social issues e.g. wealth/poverty, law and order, impact of scientific/technological progress; Cultural topics e.g. this could be a look at a French region/country, a period of French history, a French book/poem/play/film, the work of a French director/architect/musician

This certificate is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from all faculties in the university as well as members of the general public. The course can be accessed through the computer-based language-learning system in the University's multimedia Language Centre, allowing students to study at their own pace and in their own time as well as having the opportunity to attend weekly one hour tutor-contact sessions. This course will be delivered over two semesters.
There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

Course Title: Certificate in French for Business

FRENCH FOR BUSINESS
French for Business is offered as three modules:
Post GCSE: Ideally suited for students who have a previous knowledge of French, having completed at least three years French tuition at school level. The module will focus on the development of students’ language skills in French with particular reference to business contexts. It incorporates material, which will equip students with basic linguistic and cultural skills sufficient to cope in a range of business situations. Topics include: Occupations, telephoning – expressions and numbers, banking, accounting, money, socialising, directions, dining out, and booking a hotel. All topics include vocabulary, grammar exercises, and pronunciation exercises.
Intermediate: This module will build on linguistic competence gained in the introductory module or those who have already gained a level French. More complex linguistic structures are introduced to enable students to cope in a wide range of business situations. With this course students will be able to enhance their commercial and economic French. Each lesson presents texts and dialogues, and numerous oral and written exercises to evaluate progression. The CAN-8 VirtuaLab system enables students to work more on oral skills, which are essential to be efficient in today’s business world. Topics include:Le savoir vivre dans le monde des affaires,
L’Enterpreprise, Les conditions de travail dans les enterprises en France, La puissance de l’Union Europeenne, Etre patron, Les nouvelles technologies, Parler en public, Les enterprises francaises, Negocier et acheter, L’Etude de marche
Advanced: This module will equip students with advanced linguistic skills linked to business situations. Vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar are used in situational exercises using texts and dialogues. The module includes negotiating, interviewing, and contracts. Topics covered include advanced vocabulary and conversational skills in: Societies, Un Cas, La Finance Internationale, Emploi, Relations, Europe, Papiers, Cout, Logement and Transports.
This certificate is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from all faculties in the university as well as members of the general public. Students must normally pass all three modules to be awarded the certificate.
GCSE French at grade C (or equivalent) is required to for the post GSE module. Students with AS French at grade C or equivalent may be permitted to enter at Intermediate level. Students with A’Level French at grade C or equivalent may be permitted to enter at Advanced level.
