Course Title: British Sign Language Level 1

Signature Level 1 Award in BSL
The Qualification is split into three units.
BSL101: Introduction to BSL
Topics covered are meeting people, using numbers, weather, transport and directions.
BSL102: Conversational BSL
Topics covered are at home, people, animals and objects, using numbers, interests and activities, and weather.
BSL103: BSL at School, College or Work
Topics covered are getting around, exchanging information, refreshments and using numbers.
Each unit is assessed individually by having a conversation with your BSL teacher. For units 102 and 103 the exam is filmed and sent to Signature for marking. Unit 101 is assessed by your class tutor.

Course Fee: QUB staff and Students £150; Members of the Public £220.
Course fee also includes exam fees for modules BSL101, 102 and 103. Successful completion of all 3 modules will lead to the award of Level 1 in British Sign Language. Please note that an administration plus exam fee will be payable to cover resits.

Signature Level 2 Award in BSL
The Qualification is split into three units.
BSL201: Receptive Skills
BSL202: Productive Skills
BSL203: Conversational Skills
All three units are externally assessed by a Signature Assessor. BSL201 is a multiple choice exam while both BSL202 and BSL203 are filmed. The recommended guided learning hours are 100 as shown below:

Guided learning hours includes assessment time. Additional study hours include private study, homework, practice, etc.
The qualification has 4 themes:
Theme 1 Mandatory Everyday Conversation
Theme 2 Optional Eating and Drinking
Theme 3 Optional Spending and Shopping
Theme 4 Optional Travel and Holidays
Theme 1 is mandatory; learners will study 2 other themes out of the 3 optional themes above. The themes are chosen by the teacher. Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 in Unit 201. The hours within the unit include time for practice and assessment.
In Units 202 and 203 learners will consolidate and build upon the vocabulary and grammatical features of Theme 1.
Themes 2, 3 and 4 include the topics within Theme 1. Learners are expected to widen their grasp and use of BSL grammar and vocabulary in these units, whilst using a proportion of the learning hours to practice their skills and carry out the assessment for Units 202 and 203.
Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the first choice of the optional themes for Unit 202.
Learners will be assessed on the content of Theme 1 and the second choice of the optional themes for Unit 203.
