Learning Objectives

Students taking the level 1 course are not expected to have any previous knowledge of the language.  The aim of level 1 is to introduce students to the language, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at an essential level in a target language context.

Potential Topics

Welcome to the course, introduction alphabet, numbers 1-10, basic greetings; Giving personal information (name, age, where you live); Talking about our family, descriptions; Places in town and directions;  At the restaurant; Shopping; Transport; Countries.

Learning Outcomes

Students will have developed a beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above so that they can communicate at a basic level in the language.  Students will understand basic words and phrases.  Students will be able to formulate simple sentences.

Course Title:  Spanish Level 2

Level:  Post Beginners

Time:  Tuesday 5-7pm

Duration:  10 weeks

Learning Objectives

Students taking the level 2 course should either have completed level 1, or have only a basic previous knowledge of the language.  The aim of level 2 is to develop basic language skills, the culture and basic grammatical concepts and to equip them with the skills to communicate at a post-beginners level in a target language context.

Potential Topics

Practical Spelling – Numbers (up to 100) Phonetics/letter patterns; Describing the home/ accommodation;   Booking a hotel; Directions 2 – prepositions etc; Describing family members; Shopping 2 – (currency, change, preference); Transport; Weather

Learning Outcomes

Students will have developed a post-beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above, enabling them to hold a simple conversation in the language.  Students will understand frequently used words and phrases.  Students will be able to formulate sentences.

Course Title:  Spanish Level 3

Level:  Intermediate

Time:  Wednesday 7-9pm

Duration:  10 weeks

Learning Objectives

Students taking the level 3 course should either have completed level 2, or be familiar with frequently used vocabulary and have a strong beginner’s knowledge of the language.  The aim of level 3 is to further develop basic language skills; cultural awareness and grammatical ability, and further develop communication skills in the target language context.

Numbers – Dates – Ordinals – Phone numbers; Letter writing; Talking about our family, descriptions; Education and Occupation; Numbers 2 – Making practical use of numbers, arithmetic; Daily Routine;  At the Station (Train/Bus/Airport); Time

Students will have developed a post-beginner’s vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above which should give them the confidence to hold a conversation in the language.  Students will understand frequently used words and phrases.

Learning Objectives

Students taking the level 5 course should either have completed a GCSE examination in the subject, or have an equivalent knowledge of the Language.  The aim of level 5 is to develop strong language skills, cultural awareness and grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their ability and the basic competences needed to communicate in a working environment.

Potential Topics

Media: Cinema/ literature/social media; The future tense and Future plans; Travel Plans; Opinions and viewpoints; Letter/email writing; Current affairs; ‘In the workplace’ – Career/Employment

Learning outcomes

Students will have developed a broad vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above and a comprehensive knowledge of the main grammatical themes.  Students will understand frequently used words and phrases associated with everyday living, as well as working environments.  Students will be able to hold discussions and discuss opinions.

Grammar

Whilst this course is not designed to be grammar intensive, Students ought to have a grasp of the following:

Nouns: gender, singular and plural forms

Articles: definite and indefinite (including lo plus adjective)

Adjectives: agreement and position; interrogative (cuánto, qué); indefinite (alguno, cualquiera, otro);      comparative and superlative

Verbs: regular and irregular forms of verbs, including reflexive verbs; modes of address (, usted); radical-changing verbs; negative forms; uses of ser and estar

Tenses: present; preterite; imperfect; future; conditional; imperative; gerund; past participle

Adverbs: comparative and superlative

Pronouns: relative (que, quien, el que, el cual); subject; object: direct and indirect; position and order; interrogative (cuál, qué, quién); indefinite (algo, alguien)

Conjunctions: common, including y, pero, o, porque, como, cuando

Students taking the level 6 course should either have at least completed a GCSE examination in the subject, level 5 here at Queen’s, or have an equivalent knowledge of the Language.  The aim of level 6 is to develop strong language skills, cultural awareness and grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their ability and the basic competences needed to communicate in a working environment.

Healthy Living;  Popular Culture – Music;  Family Relationships (Advanced: including national trends);  In the Workplace – Register and Formal Tone (Spoken and written);  Popular Culture – Fashion and trends;  Comparative Lifestyles (Spain vs. UK);  New Technologies and Media – Mobile Phones/ Social Media/ The Internet - Discussion

Grammar

Adjectives: apocopation (buen, mal, etc); demonstrative (este, ese, aquel); possessive (short and long forms) (mi, mío); relative (cuyo); exclamatory (qué)

Adverbs: interrogative (cómo, cuándo, dónde); Quantifiers/intensifiers (muy, bastante, poco, mucho)

Pronouns: reflexive; disjunctive/emphatic; demonstrative (éste, ése, aquél, esto, eso, aquello); possessive (el mío, la mía); interrogative (cuál, qué, quién)

Verbs: impersonal verbs; verbs followed by an infinitive (with or without a preposition); perfect infinitive; interrogative forms; reflexive constructions (se vende, se nos dice que)

Learning Objectives

Students taking the level 7 course should either have completed an A-level examination in the subject, completed level 6 here at Queen’s, or have an equivalent knowledge of the Language.  The aim of level 7 is to develop strong language skills, cultural awareness and grammatical ability, giving the student confidence in their ability to express themselves and to communicate in a working environment.

Potential Topics

Environment – Renewable Energies, Polution, Global Warming; ‘An inter-cultural society’ – Cultural difference (Spain vs. UK) as well as Immigration, emigration, xenophobia; The Economy and Unemployment – And its impact on differing generations; The Subjunctive tense; The impact of Modern Technology on business and lifestyles – The Internet, social media, mobile phones

Learning outcomes

Students will have developed a broad vocabulary in the topic areas outlined above and a comprehensive knowledge of all of the main grammatical themes.  Students will have developed a strong understanding associated with the media, current affairs, everyday living, as well as working environments and an informed knowledge of tone and agenda in written texts.  Students will be able to hold thoughtful discussions and discuss opinions.

New aspects of grammar to be introduced:

Verbs

subjunctive mood: present, perfect, imperfect, pluperfect; uses of subjunctive: polite commands, negative commands; after verbs of wishing, command, request, emotion; to express purpose (para que); to express possibility/impossibility; after conjunctions of time (cuando lleguemos); in conditional sentences after si; all other common uses (R); uses of por and para

Course Title:  Certificate in Spanish for Tourism

Level:  Beginners

Time:  Wednesday 6-7pm

Duration:  20 weeks

This certificate is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from all faculties in the university as well as members of the general public.  The course can be accessed through the computer-based language-learning system in the University's multimedia Language Centre, allowing students to study at their own pace and in their own time as well as having the opportunity to attend weekly one hour tutor-contact sessions.  This course will be delivered over two semesters.

There are no specific entry requirements for this course.

Spanish for Business is offered in three modules

Introductory:  This module is aimed at those with little or no prior knowledge of Spanish. It develops students’ linguistic skills with particular reference to business contexts and equips them with a range of basic business situations. Topics include: alphabet, numbers, telephoning, greetings, socialising. Each topic makes extensive use of oral exercises to help with pronunciation and vocabulary along with the related grammatical issues.

Intermediate:  This module will build on linguistic competence gained in the introductory module. More complex linguistic structures will be introduced to enable students to cope in a wide range of business situations. Topics include:  presentations, curriculum vitae, conversation skills, banking, interviews, legal issues, and international relations.

Advanced:  The advanced Spanish for Business module consolidates learning, which has already taken place. In this module students will use the everyday business terminology in situations through the use of role play and presentations in real situations such as banking, trade fairs, conferences etc. The student is given opportunity not only to learn but also to practice interview situations, negotiating. 

This certificate is open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from all faculties in the university as well as members of the general public.  The course can be accessed through the computer-based language-learning system in the University's multimedia Language Centre, allowing students to study at their own pace and in their own time as well as having the opportunity to attend weekly one hour tutor-contact sessions.  This course will be delivered over two semesters.

Students must normally pass all three modules to be awarded the certificate. 

There are no specific entry requirements to join this course at beginners level.
