Software for Home

It is possible for staff and/or students to get access to a selection of software for home use.  The table below outlines the available software.  Note the comments beside the software, which will clearly indicate who can access the software for home and any pre-conditions for getting access to the software.   If you have any queries, contact the Computer Helpdesk.

Microsoft Office Visit the Microsoft Licensing website for licensiing and pricing information. Visit the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP) website. 

Staff Only: Under the Home Use Program (HUP), Queen's employees who are users of Microsoft Office at work, may acquire a licensed copy of the corresponding HUP software to install and use on a home computer.

Attention all Students!  Did you is possible to buy reduced price software, for example Microsoft Office?  Check out the Student Computing website for more information.
Home Symantec Antivirus (SAV) Free.  Staff can borrow the disk, but it must be returned to the Computer Shop (McClay Library)! Computer Shop - McClay Library

Staff Only: Updates not managed by Queen's.  You must download the updates manually at home.

Staff and Students:  Staff and Students can have a copy of the software for home usage, provided they agree to the terms of the licence, for example:

  • You must not copy the software and pass it on to others
  • You must remove the software from your home computer when you leave the University

This software is protected by a key that is changed annually!
Note for staff and students!  Did you know...there are also free anti-virus and firewall software products for home use?  These are available to download from the Internet and are not supported by Queen's.  Some examples of these free software products are listed as follows: Avast anti-virus, AVG anti-virus, and ZoneAlarm (anti-virus and firewall). 

Note: You will require Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer to download pdf files.  This software can be downloaded from the Adobe website.
