Open Access Publisher Memberships

The Library subscribes to a number of open access (OA) memberships and pre-pay schemes that reduce the cost of article processing charges (APCs) and these are listed below. Please email openaccess@qub.ac.uk if you have any questions about the schemes.

A comprehensive list of OA journals is provided by the Directory of Open Access Journals.

BioMed Central Pre-pay Membership

There is some funding available to Queen’s researchers to pay the full APCs for the publication of research articles in one of the BioMed Central OA journals.

Authors must register on the Biomed Central site before they can submit manuscripts, set up alerts for articles or post comments on articles.

Elsevier Prepaid Open Access Plan

The Library has prepaid the APCs of RCUK-funded papers that are accepted for publication in Elsevier hybrid and OA journals up to 14 March 2014.

IEEE Open Access Article Processing Charges

The Library has prepaid the APCs for a small number of RCUK-sponsored papers that are accepted for publication in IEEE journals.

PLOS (Public Library of Science) Journals

The Public Library of Science is an OA publisher, specialising in science and medicine.  Queen’s research staff receive a 10% discount on publication fees in all PLOS journals.

Royal Society of Chemistry ‘Gold for Gold’ Initiative

As a subscriber to the RSC’s Gold journals package, the University has received a number of ‘Gold for Gold’ credits, allowing Queen’s researchers whose papers are accepted by the RSC to have them published as gold open-access articles without paying the normal APCs.

Enquiries about this initiative should be directed to Janet Drake, who is the Subject Librarian for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering:

Royal Society Open Access Institutional Membership

Research staff and students in Queen’s can benefit from a 25% discount on APCs for OA publications in any of the Royal Society’s journals.  If an article written by a Queen’s author is accepted for publication, the author will be asked to identify themselves as being a member of Queen’s, the 25% discount will be applied upon payment of the APC.

Sage Choice Journals

The rates for Sage Choice APCs are normally between £800 and £1600 but because the Library subscribes to the Sage NESLI ejournals deal, researchers at Queen’s only pay £200.
