November 2012 Round-up - The McClay Library
Semester 1 24-hour opening
Overnight opening in the McClay Library for the first semester pre-examination period will begin on Sunday 2 December and will run until Friday 14 December. It resumes in the New Year from Wednesday 2 January until Sunday 20 January 2013. During this period, the Library will remain open overnight, from 12.00 noon on Sundays through to 2.00am on Friday evenings. Study facilities will be available from 6.00am on Saturday mornings, four hours before the Library is fully open, until 2.00am on Saturday evenings.
Additional opening of all floors until 2.00am is planned during this pre-examination period in order to meet additional late evening demand identified during the June 2012 examination period. Further extended provision includes opening the entire Ground Floor at 6.00am on Saturday mornings during this period to provide additional study seats for those sitting exams on Saturday mornings.
Full details will be available shortly from the Library website at: http://www.qub.ac.uk/lib/

RFID and Automated Book Sorter
A project to place RFID tags in all books in the Library has just been completed. Until now, the Library has used a barcode to uniquely identify each book but RFID technology is now replacing this. The RFID tag is able to carry a great deal more information about the book than is possible on a barcode. Until now, only the Short Loan Collection in the McClay Library has used RFID technology but we are now standardising on this technology across the McClay Library. This new development will enable us to trace missing items more quickly, to carry out regular stock checks and to improve the accuracy of the Library Catalogue. Funding has also been secured to enable the Library to acquire an automatic book sorter for returned items and this will be installed in summer 2013.
Self Service Laptops
If you have borrowed a laptop in the McClay Library and then received an overdue reminder after you returned it, this could be because you have placed the laptop back to front when you returned it to the self-service locker. There are small yellow arrows stuck on the top of each laptop. When you place the laptop in the locker follow the direction of the arrows. If in doubt, please ask a member of staff for assistance.
