Ethics Proportionate Review

Proportionate review is aimed at those studies that present ‘no material ethical issues’ and the research is deemed to be off minimal risk or burden to research participants.  Such studies would be reviewed by a proportionate review sub-committee within 14 days of receipt of a valid application.

A centralised, UK-wide booking system has now been set up for Proportionate Review applications.

This means that all researchers wishing to book a study for Proportionate Review should telephone the dedicated booking line which is based in the Manchester REC Centre.  The number is 0161 625 7704.  It will no longer be possible for researchers to make bookings for PR studies through ORECNI, all bookings must be made through the centralised system.

On calling the Proportionate Review Allocation System (PRAS) number, researchers will be taken through a booking in checklist, assessing suitability for Proportionate Review and checking that paperwork can be submitted within 2 days to the REC assigned to review the application.  They will be offered the first available slot for review, which could be by any REC within the UK.  It is recommended that researchers have already obtained the appropriate electronic authorisations, before ringing to request a PR review slot to facilitate them in delivering paperwork (either electronically or in hard copy) within the 2 days.

Further information on the Proportionate Review system can be found on the NRES website: http://www.nres.nhs.uk/applications/proportionate-review/
