Pure Definitions and Scope of Data

The content types in Pure are mainly divided into two categories (Submission and Master data).

Submission Content Types

Research output - Publications (articles, chapters, books, etc...)
A research output exists in many variations, from written to non-textual form, and reflects the main output of academic productivity. A Research output is considered a distribution of a work, or a part of this work.
The existing research output data held in the My Research - My Publications database was migrated into Pure on 16/7/2012.

Activities
These were called structured Measures of Esteem in the old My Research system. Where possible (where there was sufficient relevant information) these have been migrated into Pure.
An activity covers a wide range of actions that a person can organise, participate or in other ways be involved in.

Projects
Projects are funded projects that are synchronised into Pure from QFIS.
All Research Projects (R QFIS Code projects) with spend after 1/8/2007 and any currently open QFIS (R Code) project will be synchronised into Pure.

Applications for Funding
Information about external funding application that can result in economic help to a project.
Successful and unsuccessful applications for funding are synchronised into Pure from the University Research Contracts System.
The scope of the dataset includes all R&C projects that have had an application for funding since 1/1/2005.

Impact
The Impact Template in Pure is used to define an Impact, based on a selection of different Impact Natures (Economic, Social, Public Policy, Cultural, Quality of Life, Other) and Levels (Engagement, Adoption and Benefit).
Impact added by an individual to their profile is not automatically used for the REF 3 Impact submission. However impact stored in this section by individuals may be considered when  the REF 3 submission is being compiled at a UoA level.

Master Data Content Types

Users
Users are able to log in to Pure. If they are assigned one or more roles, they will be able to complete one or more working tasks. Users can be associated with a person and is then known as a personal user.

Journals
Journals are used to add to templates, where the content has been published in a journal. E.g. articles.

Publishers
Publishers are used to add to templates, where the content has been published by a publisher. E.g. books.

Events
Events are used to describe conferences, workshops, seminars etc. and can be related to other content in Pure. A typical example would be an activity, where a personal user has participated in a conference. The information about this conference is stored in a separate master data type - events - and can then be reused by other participants from the same conference.

Organisations
Organisations mirrors the organisational hierarchy of the University. Each organisational unit has a number of persons and users attached to it.

External organisations
External organisations are used to describe external collaborators; universities, organisations, research funds etc. and can be related to other content in Pure.

Persons
Every Person has a profile with detailed information about the actual employee and, if available, research and research activites, related to the Person. The profile is usually viewable and searchable from a web portal. A Person is related to one or more organisations.
A Person can be currently employed as either an internal or external person or be former employed as internal or external.
Persons included within the dataset in Pure are synchronised nightly from the university HR systems. The scope of the data set includes persons in the following categories:

  • Research
  • Academic
  • Honorary
  • Clerical
  • Technical
  • Visiting Title
  • Master of Philosophy
  • Academic Related
  • Teaching Fellow / Assistant

The scope includes current and former persons who were employed by the University from 1/1/2005-present, in the above categories.
PhD students who were supervised by researchers within the current REF period are included in the dataset for the system but do not have log in rights to Pure.
The Research Portal only shows profile information for current research and academic staff only.

External person
External persons are used to describe external co-authors, i.e. authors that are not employed at the current organisation. External persons can be added to content in the same ways as internal persons can be, though only external organisations can be related to them.
