Research Data Management Strategy

In accordance with RCUK commitments and EPSRC expectations, Queen’s has developed a Research Data Management Strategy for the period May 2012 to May 2015.

The UK Research Councils have provided a commitment to establish an open and transparent research process in which data is made available to users, and outcomes from research are communicated and disseminated effectively.  The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has set out a list of expectations concerning the management and provision of access to EPSRC-funded research data (http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/about/standards/researchdata/Pages/expectations.aspx).  The EPSRC has specifically requested that all organisations in receipt of EPSRC funding should develop a data management policy and ensure that all policies and processes are aligned with EPSRC expectations by 1st May 2015.

The Queen's strategy recognises that open access to research data can have benefits such as increasing research dissemination, raising the research profile of individuals and institutions, improving awareness of research practices and opportunities, and enabling innovative re-use of data to enhance research outcomes.

In late 2012, a Research Data Working Group was established to provide feedback, guidance and direction during the three year implementation period. As well as staff from Research and Enterprise Directorate and Information Services, this Group includes members of academic staff across four Schools.
