Learn-a-Long is a volunteer tutoring programme for university students wishing to gain experience in schools tutoring children with reading, math and language difficulties. It will commence in January 2012 and will finish in May 2012. The recruitment of university students will take place between September and December 2011. The students will be asked to tutor two pupils in the same school for 30 minutes each, on two days a week for twelve weeks. During this time a randomised controlled trial will take place assessing the effectiveness of each of the tutoring programmes as part of the PhD research of three PhD students in the School of Education.
In addition to the preparation for the tutoring sessions, which will involve reading the programme manual and ensuring that they have the suitable materials, the students will be asked to fill out feedback sheets after each day.
