QUB recommends students work no longer than 15 hours per week in part-time employment. There is evidence to show that working in excess of this impacts on academic performance and degree classification ultimately achieved.
Part-time work can be a useful way of earning money and developing skills which are valued by graduate recruiters at the same time.
QUB offers an On-Campus JobShop which has advertises part-time jobs available in QUB Schools and Departments. There is significant variety in work on offer, from helping prepare a mailshot to working at graduation ceremonies and offering a direct reception service to fellow students using, for example, the Student Guidance Centre. To give you an idea of some of the options available, here are details of work areas undertaken by students annually or when required:
Each year, the on-campus jobshop helps around 500 students access work on campus. To register go to www.qol.qub.ac.uk. Once registered you will be notified of vacancies by email.
In addition our off-campus jobshop helps students locate work with employers external to the university. These vacancies our hosted on our vacancy database.
Given the diversity of opportunity, it is difficult to address all skills which may be developed through part-time work. However, it is likely that students will develop:
Commercial awareness which is critical to success in graduate recruitment.
Organisational and time management skills.
Written and oral communication skills.
Supervisory and team work skills.
Inevitably there may be more skills developed through part-time work and applicants for the Degree Plus Award should clearly identify these in their application to the Degree Plus Panel.
