Ensembles

The School of Music and Sonic Arts provides opportunities for membership to a wide range of auditioned ensembles. These are directed by professional musicians from outside the School together with a member of academic staff. Ensembles have scheduled weekely rehearsals which are geared toward the development of skills and repertoire. Ensemble work is showcased in public concerts with most ensembles having one concertper semester schedules in the Music@Queen's series in addition to events outside the university. The school currently runs the following ensembles:

  • Big Band, directed by Steve Barnett of the Ulster Orchestra
  • Brass Band, directed by Professor Michael Alcorn, Head of School
  • Chamber Choir, directed by David Revels
  • Camerata, the School's Chamber Orchestra, directed by Colin Stark of the Ulster Orchestra
  • QUBEnsemble, specialising in improvisation and directed by jazz drummer, Steve David

Students must attend audition in the beginning of the semester. Once students become members of an ensemble they are expected to attend rehearsals, performances and contribute to the organisation and marketing of the ensemble.

Ensemble involvement to the required standard qualifies as Route A for Degree Plus.
