Covering letters

CVs should be accompanied by a covering letter which explains your motivation for the opportunity and highlights key skills and experiences to grab the employer's attention.

Written correctly, the covering letter should impress and encourage the employer to read your CV and subsequently invite you for interview.

Content:  

  • An introduction to you and the reason for this letter - including the work you are applying for and where you saw it advertised
  • Why you are interested in this work and employer
  • Why you believe you are suitable. Draw attention to relevant qualifications, work experience and skills.

Tips: 

  • Restrict covering letter to one page
  • Where possible, address your letter to a specific person within the company. If you don't have a contact name you could try contacting the company- personnel or human resources
  • Generic covering letters are easy to spot and don't impress.
    Tailor your letter by demonstrating your knowledge of the company. Avoid simply repeating information found on their website or in the news. Instead use that information to explain your motivation to work for them.
    Tailor your letter by referring directly to the criteria they have asked for in their job advert / person specification. Mirror the language they have used.
