There are lots of employability-enhancing activities available through QUB.  Here are a few suggestions that would be of particular interest to students of these degree programmes.

Any year:

Level 1:

  • Look for summer work – a number of summer internships will be advertised on MyFuture after Easter.
  • The Amgen Scholars Europe programme - summer research experience in Europe for students interested in progressing to PhD and a career in Research
  • Participate in a speed mentoring night (November and February)
  • Interested in Teaching? Teach First run a Taster Programme for Level 1 students
  • Interested in Professional Services or Banking and Finance? Some companies run Insight” schemes for first year students  e.g. Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwCBank of EnglandBarclaysCiti

Level 2 / Penultimate Year:

Internship opportunities related to Biomedical Science and Human Biology

  • Cancer Research provides some summer placement opportunities for undergraduates with their Beatson Institute and the Francis Crick Institute - Applications usually open around January-March.
  • IAESTE - paid work experience abroad for students of Science, Technology and Applied Arts in 2nd year and above. Placements related to degree programme. Application deadline is in autumn.
  • The Amgen Scholars Europe programme - summer research experience in Europe for students interested in progressing to PhD and a career in Research
  • Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute Summer Placements and Wellcome Trust Vacation Scholarships provide ‘promising’ undergraduates with ‘hands-on’ research experience during the summer vacation – to encourage them to consider a career in research.  Applicants must be in the middle year of a science degree
  • USA Placement Programme - The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences has a USA Placement Programme, open to students in the second year of their Biomedical Sciences or Human Biology degrees. Students accepted to the programme spend one year in a laboratory in a USA university working as a research assistant
  • Diamond provide some Biological Sciences summer placements. Applications usually open in January.
  • Some large pharma companies e.g. Pfizer run year-long placements and summer internships.  See the ABPI Careers website for a database of opportunities.
  • The Royal Society of Biology list some long term and short term student placement/internship opportunities.
  • Are you clear about which career option you want to follow?  Participate in the Alumni Career Mentoring Scheme.

Sources of funding for research projects

Internship opportunities related to areas other than Biomedical Science and Human Biology

  • Large companies in other sectors may offer year-long placements and summer internships to students of any degree discipline. MyFuture, Ratemyplacement, Prospects, Targetjobs and Gradcracker are useful sites for finding these. Many of the deadlines are set around December so it’s best to start applying in autumn.
  • Consider applying for Project Children – 8 week paid internship in the US. Internships are provided in many fields. Application deadline is in spring.
  • Interested in Teaching? Teach First run an Insight Programme for Level 2 / Penultimate year students
  • Interested in Banking and Finance? A lot of the big companies run summer internship programmes e.g. Barclays, Deloitte, EY, HSBC, JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, PwC, Standard Life and a few run year-long placements e.g. Deloitte, EY, First Derivatives, KPMG and PwC. Apply early in the autumn term!

Level 3 / Final Year UG:

  • Apply early for graduate schemes and / or postgraduate study.
