Erasmus Outgoing Study Placements

Erasmus offers you the opportunity to study for part of your degree at a university in another European country. You may study for either one semester or a full academic year in one of 31 different European countries. Erasmus provides financial support for full-time students and is open to all levels in the majority of disciplines, although you should check specific options within your academic School. Erasmus can benefit you by providing the opportunity to:

  • Develop confidence, self-reliance and other personal skills
  • Make new friends and gain a greater awareness of another country and its culture
  • Apply the language skills in the country itself
  • Enhance employment opportunities and appeal to graduate employers

Erasmus Outgoing Work Placements

Work or language assistant placements which are part of your degree programme may be funded through Erasmus. As with academic study, the work placement should be recognised by Queen's as part of your degree programme and will need to be approved by your School. Examples of disciplines where placements are available include Modern Languages and Management and Accountancy degrees with a Modern Language, as well as some opportunities in Architecture, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Computer Science. As with study placements the experience can help with:

  • Preparation for future employment through insights to work
  • Developing valuable language skills, increasingly sought in a global knowledge economy
  • Experiencing different working styles and another culture
  • Increased confidence as well as enhanced personal and employability skills

International Business Degree Programmes

A number of international business degree programmes within Queen’s University Management School include an integral work placement year abroad. For example, the 4-year International Business with a Modern Language (French, German and Spanish) offered jointly by Queen’s University Management School and the School of Languages, Literatures and Performing Arts involves a compulsory placement year (which counts as Level 3). Students spend the year working abroad in a company and experienced staff at Queen’s assist in determining the most suitable placement and in preparing you for the year abroad. This is an integral part of the degree programme, providing you with the fluency and confidence to communicate effectively both professionally and personally. TheDegrees in Accounting with a Modern Languageand in Economics with a Modern Language(French, German and Spanish) also involve compulsory international year out work placements. Placements are for a minimum of 9 months but can last up to 15 months. Finance and Actuarial students often take a summer placement in the USA, Luxembourg, Spain or France, among others. The new degree MSc Risk Management and Financial Regulation has a built in placement, which last year took place in the USA.
