Erasmus Intensive Language Courses
Language Proficiency
Some of Queen's Erasmus partners will teach in the medium of English (for example in the Netherlands and Scandinavia), however for many host universities you will have to be fluent in the language of the host country, at least by the time you come to take examinations.
Except in case of language students undertaking study placements as part of their degree, it is unlikely that a Queen’s student will be proficient enough to undertake a study programme taught and examined in a foreign language.
It is important that Erasmus Programme Directors bear this fact in mind when they are selecting destinations for their students. Language training in advance of mobility may help, and students are therefore encouraged to attend the Language Centre in the Library. However, it may not be sufficient grounding to enable a student to study their subject in a foreign language.
Erasmus Intensive Language Courses
The EILCs, an initiative supported by the European Commission, are intended to enable Erasmus students to function socially and academically in a host country whose language is not widely spoken or taught abroad.
What for?
The Erasmus students will study the language of the host country before starting their Erasmus study period. The EILCs will be offered at two levels of linguistic knowledge (Level I: beginner; Level II: Intermediate).
Where?
EILCs are normally planned to take place in the following countries: Belgium (Flemish Community), Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Turkey.
Courses are available to students going to Spain in the following languages: Basque, Catalan, Galician and Valencian ONLY. NB. Courses in Spanish Castilian, French, and German are not eligible for EILCs. Students selected for a study period in Spain can check a map at this link to see whether their receiving institutions are located in one of the eligible Spanish regions.
When?
The EILCs take place in the summer before the start of the academic year in the host country. Courses vary in length according to country and the student’s level of language knowledge, and normally last between 3 weeks and 6 weeks. Full information about dates, places and levels of the courses are available on the EILC website at http://ec.europa.eu/education/erasmus/doc902_en.htm
Who can participate?
The EILCs are for students participating in the Erasmus programme who have been accepted to study or work in one of the European countries listed above, for a full academic year or for a semester. There are limits on the numbers of participating students to each country.
How?
Students should submit applications by email to the Exchange and Study Abroad team by 25 May - send to erasmus@qub.ac.uk
Download an application form here.
The Exchange and Study Abroad team will be responsible for forwarding the applications to the course organisers in the host countries. Information notes on the courses on offer are available from the EILC website - http://ec.europa.eu/education/erasmus/doc1300_en.htm

Grant
Participating students do not have to pay any kind of fee for the EILCs. Outgoing Erasmus students from Queen's will receive a normal Erasmus grant for the duration of the course. In return, students will be asked to contribute to the evaluation of the courses and of their impact on their academic studies.
