Teaching English in Thailand Project (TET)

Teaching English in Thailand Project            **Deadline Extended**

The Teaching English in Thailand project (TET) is offered by the Ministry of Education in Thailand, with support from the British Council.  It aims to improve the English language competence of school-age students in state schools in Thailand.  UK students and graduates, will be placed in schools, colleges and community centres around Thailand as English Teaching Assistants (ETAs). 

  • The TET school placements will run for 8 weeks from 15th July to 6th September 2013
  • For this project there will be over 300 English Teaching Assistants recruited, from participating Higher Education Institutions in the UK, and placed around the country.
  • Participating schools and colleges will be located in towns all over Thailand
  • A mentor teacher will be allocated in each school to look after the ETAs
  • The package for ETAs includes: a monthly allowance of 10000 baht and free accommodation during placement; in-country travel to and from placement; UK and in-country briefing and training programme; professional support from the British Council.

Important note: Participants will need to cover costs for UK-Thailand-UK flight, Thai visa, Criminal Records Bureau check (CRB), insurance and the cost of travelling to a UK based pre-departure briefing.

The ETAs will work with Thai teachers of English to:

  • assist in the development of conversational English in the classroom
  • contribute to extra-curricular programmes and school, college and community life
  • enhance Thai students’ understanding of UK culture
  • help increase student interest and motivation in studying English in Thai classrooms
  • provide support to the Thai teachers of English to help develop their English language skills and classroom methodology

Through the work experience opportunity, the ETAs themselves will:

  • gain valuable international work experience
  • develop their ability to work comfortably in multi-national teams and contexts
  • increase their understanding and appreciation of Thai cultures
  • develop introductory skills for teaching English
  • increase their own awareness and understanding of their own language and culture
  • enhance their employability back in the UK and overseas

Eligibility Criteria:

The ETAs need to be flexible and able to adapt to different cultures and traditions quickly. They are not required to have any teaching qualifications, but they must have a keen interest in language and excellent English language communication skills. The briefing information in the UK and Thailand will provide some guidelines on starting out in the English classroom. However if the programme is oversubscribed, the British Council will prioritise those candidates who are studying to be teachers.

If you would like to take up the opportunity to work as an English Teaching Assistant in Thailand, you are eligible to apply if you meet ALL of these criteria:

  • You hold a UK or Irish passport
  • You are 18 or over
  • You are currently a student in higher education in the UK, or are graduating this year, 2013
  • Your level of English is native speaker competence, and you have excellent communication skills in both written and spoken English
  • You have an keen awareness of language(s)
  • You have a keen interest in gaining work experience  in Thailand
  • You have a keen interest in gaining work experience  as an English language teaching assistant
  • You are available for the full period of this assignment  from July 15th to September 6th
  • You can pay for your own flight, visa, insurance and CRB check 
  • You are in good health and have no medical condition that would affect you travelling to Thailand or carrying out this role
  • You comply with medical requirements prior to travelling, e.g. have the recommended vaccinations
  • You are able to attend a Pre departure briefing in the UK and Orientation on arrival in Bangkok.

Application Procedure:

Your application for the programme must be submitted via your university in the UK, for forwarding to the British Council.  Queen’s students can download the application form here

Your application should be completed electronically, then printed and signed.  You can then either scan and email your application to erasmus@qub.ac.uk or submit it in hard copy to:

**Deadline Extended** The British Council has advised that additional places are available, so the closing date for applications has been extended to Tuesday 28 May. 

Students who applied by the original 10 May deadline have already been notified of the outcome of their application.  Students applying by 28 May for the additional places are likely to be notified in early June and will have to accept or decline their place straight away.  It is, therefore, important to check your email regularly as you will be expected to make a quick response.
