Information for Students Receiving Assistance from Support Providers

Information for Students Receiving Assistance from Support Providers

Queen's Register of Support Providers provides one-to-one personal support to disabled students through the use of skilled and experienced Support Providers enlisted from a variety of backgrounds.

At your needs assessment meeting, your Disability Officer will determine whether or not you would benefit from the assistance of a Support Provider(s).

Support Providers are self-employed individuals who provide a variety of non-medical academic support (see below) to students to help them develop strategies to overcome the academic challenges associated with their disabilities.

Support Provider Roles
 Study Skills Tutor  Note Taker
Campus Assistant  Maths & Statistics Tutor
Dyslexia Tutor  Academic Mental Health Tutor
 Exam Scribe  Asperger's/Autism Tutor
 Foreign Language Tutor  Proof Reader
 Reader  Library Assistant
 IT Tutor  Typist
Interpreter (BSL & ISL)  Audio Typist

Students will work with one or more Support Providers depending on their needs and the nature and severity of the disability.  Queen's Register of Support Providers maintains a database of qualified and experienced Support Providers who are keen and available to work with disabled students.  Please see the Job Descriptions and Personnel Specifications for an outline of the roles and responsibilities for each type of Support Provider.  Please also see the range of Guidelines available to Support Providers for clarification of their remits and responsibilities.  Students referred for Exam Scribe support are strongly advised to read the Exam Scribing Guidelines for Students document.

Whilst Queen's Register of Support Providers' primary aim is to meet the support requirements of disabled students, it is simultaneously responsible for providing advice and guidance to those individuals who actually provide the support to Queen's students.  As such, students must accept responsibility for the management of their own programme of support from a Support Provider.   Please see our guidance leaflet 'Students' Guide to Queen's Register of Support Providers'.

Sources of Support for Students in Distress

Most students will have emotional problems at some point during their time at University but these will be even more of a challenge for students also coping with disabilities.  Please see Sources of Support for Students in Distress for further information and useful contact information.
