Participating in Tutorials

Participating in Tutorials

In tutorial most communication is a two way process. Someone speaks and the others listen. Sometimes the lecturer will not spend a lot of time talking. He/she may begin by raising a topic, and then allow members of the tutorial to have an informal debate. At other times the lecturer may divide the group up and give groups different topics to discuss. The aim of this is to initiate thinking and create both sides of an argument. If a tutorial takes this format then you will be expected to participate.

Some Practical Tips for Participating in Tutorials:

  • Think about the underlying themes and topics for the tutorial
  • Make sure you have prepared in advance including any exercise or readings
  • If you have a question, don’t think it’s a stupid one! – Odds are another student will be thinking the same
  • Any questions or issues should be asked as early as possible – therefore allowing time for them to be answered
  • Make sure you make a contribution
  • When contributing, try and be concise
  • Don’t take criticism of any of your ideas or views personally – you should expect someone to disagree or argue against something you say – if everyone agreed then tutorials would be pointless!
