Students and Guests with Disabilities

Queen’s University is committed to supporting students and their guests with disabilities and we will endeavour to meet their individual needs when they attend graduation ceremonies.

When you are registering for graduation, the following are two questions asked on your Graduation Registration page regarding you or your guests:

Graduation Registration Wizard - extra requirements

When completing the ‘please specify’ box, please include as much information as possible so we can assist your and your guests on your Graduation day.

The ceremony

Graduands mount a short flight of steps to the platform to have their degree conferred. If you know you are likely to have difficulty mounting these steps please contact us as soon as possible so that suitable arrangements can be agreed.  We are able to offer three options:

We can arrange for a member of staff to help you up and down the platform steps.

We can arrange for you to shake hands with the Chancellor/Vice Chancellor at the bottom of the platform steps.

We can arrange for you to use the lift situated behind the platform, allowing access to the platform via doors on the stage.

In our experience most graduands choose either option 1 or 2 as this ensures they remain with their friends and classmates.  Unfortunately there is an unavoidable delay and detachment from the other graduands should you wish to use the lift behind the platform.

You do not need to make your decision immediately – please contact us on 028 90973223 and we can make arrangements for you to try the lift before the ceremony to assist you with your decision.

Hearing impairment

The Great Hall is equipped with a hearing loop system to assist those graduands and guests with hearing impairments. Should you require a hearing loop please contact our Eventus team on as soon as possible.

The Sir William Whitla Hall has wheelchair access, but no lift to the upper gallery seats. Where we have knowledge of access issues, we will ensure ground floor tickets are issued.

Guide dogs are welcome on the university campus and in the Sir William Whitla Hall.

Disabled/mobility car access is permitted on the day of your ceremony, car parking spaces may also be available on a first come first served basis on the campus. Please note that car parking is limited during the busy graduation period.

Any queries regarding parking for Graduation must be put to the Security team on 028 9097 5099.

The Hall

For students with hearing difficulties, an induction loop system is installed in the Hall, covering the ground floor and the front rows of the balcony. This is turned on only where requested.

Guide dogs are welcome on the university campus and in the Sir William Whitla Hall.

If you have omitted any information on your Graduation Registration page regarding access or communication requirements, please contact the Graduation Helpline as soon as possible prior to your graduation to ensure that the suitable arrangements can be put in place for you and your guests.
