Junior Academy Sports Programme

Sports Leaders Celebrate Success

The Queen’s Academy Sports Programme is a progressive activity from Year 8 to Year 10. The programme aims to introduce young males to Higher Education though sport, enhancing their communication, leadership and team work skills.

In Year 10 participants are offered the opportunity to complete a Level 1 Sports Leaders Award through Sports Leaders UK. The award provides a starting point for learners who wish to develop their leadership skills. It is a practical qualification in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others in sports and activities.

At the end of the last academic year, 3 schools completed the Year 10 aspect of the programme and were presented with their accreditation on Thursday, 15th September. We would like to congratulate the pupils from Bangor Academy & 6th Form College, Kilkeel High School and Malone Integrated College who successfully completed the qualification.

Vice Chancellor Patrick Johnston congratulated the young men on their achievement and Alderman Brian Kingston, Lord Mayor of Belfast presented certificates to the 25 young men who successfully completed the Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership.

As part of the celebration event 5 young people were awarded the Sports Leader UK, Spirit of Leadership Award. These awards can be given to those participants who tutors feel go above and beyond what is required to complete the course, or those who have shown special skills and attributes.

The recipients of the Spirit of Leadership Award were:

Curtis Bailey, Kilkeel High School

Billy Cassells, Bangor Academy & 6th Form College

Morgan Pettigrew, Malone Integrated College

Myles Quinn, Malone Integrated College

Andrew Spence, Kilkeel High School

Congratulations to all those who completed the qualification. We look forward to welcoming our new Year 10 Sports Leaders in January 2017.
