ELECTRON MICROSCOPY UNIT
As part of the School of Maths & Physics
the University Microscopy Unit has a range of
state-of-the-art facilities for materials analysis.
An understanding of materials with new and exciting
properties, and the ability to fabricate them, is of great
importance to the future well-being of modern, high-tech
industries. The development of new media and their exploitation
in commercial devices is also relevant to the work carried out
by the staff in the University. As well as growing materials and
determining their functional properties it is equally important
to be able to know and understand the chemistry and
crystallography all the way down to an atomic level. The Microscopy Suite
is housed in state of the art laboratory space within the new
IRCEP.
In 2000 we obtained £1.4M of EPSRC funding to
provide a new high resolution transmission electron microscope,
a focused ion beam microscope and thin film X-ray diffractometer.
A new £300+K JEOL 6500F
field-emission SEM with both EDX and WDX analytical
capabilities has just been commissioned.
In other pages we list the
facilities and services that are available for use, by users
within and outside the University.
