Ecological design of urban green space - A Place for human values? - 17th
The impetus for this seminar comes from the growing importance within the field of environmental sustainability for strategies that involve protection and enhancement of ecosystem services. It will explore the significance of integrating the health of the urban environment with the well-being of urban dwellers in planning and designing urban green spaces. Ecologically designed green spaces in urban residential areas in Ireland and the UK, combine active participation, and education for ecoliteracy to enable individuals to be active agents in realising choices, values and change in their lives. It has been suggested that such spaces use ecological design principles and features to transcend issues of local conflict to promote pro-environmental behaviours and social justice within the built environment. In this way these are transformative spaces in which urban dwellers can experience processes to develop dimensions of a more ‘ecological well-being’.
