This website has been developed and constructed by a group of postgraduate students in the Department of Environmental Planning at the Queens University of Belfast in conjunction with  semester one module Local and Regional Sustainability.  The group consists of Andrew Gibson BSc, Tim Leahy BSc and Jonathan Mallon BSc, the group would like to express their gratitude to Ralf Brand for his mentorship during the project.

Introduction

This web page has been constructed in order to ascertain the affects that the planned closure of the North Foreshore site could have on Waste Management and Sustainability in Belfast and Northern Ireland.  We will discuss the Background to the North Foreshore site and Waste Management in Northern Ireland, the reasons for its Closure and what is planned to take its place in the area (we will discuss the viability of the Proposals that the Northern Ireland Planning Office puts forward).  From this juncture we will argue for and against some of the Alternatives to the Dargan Road site and examine some of the Legislation in relation to Landfill.
