Geraint Ellis

Geraint is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Environmental Planning, which he joined in 1998. He is a graduate of the Universities of Birmingham and Reading and began his career working for community and environmental organisations in the east end of London. During the mid 1990s he worked as a planning and community development advisor to he Government of Lesotho in Southern Africa, after which he returned to active service in urban regeneration in London, before coming to Queen’s.

His main research interests include sustainable development, environmental ethics and equality issues in planning. His recent publications cover these areas, including Third Party Rights of Appeal in Planning: Reflecting on the Experience of the Republic of Ireland (Town Planning Review, 2002 Vol. 73, No. 4, p. 437- 466), Social Exclusion, Equality and the Good Friday Peace Agreement: The implications for land use Planning (Policy and Politics, 2001Vol. 29, No. 4 pp. 393-411) and The Difference Context Makes: Planning And Ethnic Minorities In Northern Ireland (European Planning Studies, 2001, Vol. 9, No.3, pp.339 - 358.). He has recently completed a major study examining local sustainability practice across the island of Ireland and is involved in a long-term project assessing the value of environmental rights. He was awarded the European Planning Studies Prize in 2002.

He also has a keen interest in teaching, running a number of undergraduate and postgraduate modules on sustainable development and political aspects of planning. Geraint coordinates the final year of the B.Sc. in Environmental Planning and is the School’s Undergraduate Advisor of Studies and Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee. He was awarded a Queen’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003.

Geraint is also active in the voluntary sector and is a Board Director of Belfast Healthy Cities, Community Technical Aid (CTA) and Sustainable NI. He also advises Planning Aid (NI), Transport 2000 (NI) and the Traveller Movement and acts as the Irish contact for the International Network of Urban Research and Action (INURA). In 2001 his work for the Northern Ireland Cycling Initiative was awarded a certificate of recognition for his exceptional contribution to Local Agenda 21 in Northern Ireland.
