Dr Murray is a Reader in the School of Environmental Planning at Queen's University Belfast. He completed his postgraduate studies in planning at Queen's.

His research interests include partnership governance, strategic planning, heritage tourism and community-led rural development, on all of which he has published widely. His research also takes him to the United States where he has been a Visiting Scholar at Colorado State University engaged in analyses of federal-state partnership activities and local regeneration. He is the author of The politics and pragmatism of urban containment (1991, Avebury), co-author of Revitalising rural America - a perspective on collaboration and community (1996, John Wiley & Sons), Partnership goveranance in Northern Ireland - the path to peace (1998, Oak Tree Press, Dublin), co-editor of Rural Development in Ireland - a challenge for the 1990s (1993, Avebury), and Rural Planning and Development in Northern Ireland (2002, Institute of Public Administration, Dublin) and Participatory Goverance (2004, Ashgate).

He holds coporate membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Irish Planning Institute, and is a member of the Regional Studies Association.

He is married to Sheelagh, lives in County Down, and includes Sunday morning walks on the golf course in a regular 4-ball as amongst his interests.
