The cinema has been the major art form of the last century, popular in its appeal and radical in its practices. It has transformed our ways of seeing and storytelling. It has had an impact on all the arts and modern culture.
It is an area of experiment, critical interest and immense pleasure.
We aim to introduce students to the widest possible experience of film culture.

The programmes provide a critical and practice-based framework for studying the cinema, and the visual arts. The department is equipped with a range of still and moving image cameras (16mm, ProHD, XDCAM) and editing suites for use by students. Specialist tuition is available from film professionals to support student projects.
We work closely with the Queen's Film Theatre , Northern Ireland's premier art house cinema, and all class screenings and student work are screened in the QFT under normal exhibition conditions.
Belfast, Ireland's second city, has a lively arts scene with arts festivals, an international film festival, and a burgeoning range of galleries and venues.

Belfast has also become the base for growing numbers of television, radio and independent film production companies and we work closely with a creative professionals. Film Studies provides an excellent background for work in the film, television and media industries. It also offers academic and academic related career possibilities.

There are currently around 2000 full-time and part-time international students enrolled in undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Queen's University and its Film and Visual Studies programmes continues to attract many students from all over the world.
