School Funding Opportunities

Some Schools in Queen's may have studentships/bursaries available outside the centrally allocated awards.

Students should ensure that they ask their supervisory team and check their School web pages for details of any available School funding.

Postgraduate-Led Initiatives

Funding is available throughout the year for Postgraduate-Led Initiatives. This funding is allocated for training initiatives developed and delivered by postgraduate research students which benefit other research students.

The initiatives can involve organising a conference, research seminar or some other appropriate training activity. They encourage research students to develop their transferable skills through working independently and in teams on activities that benefit other research students. To apply for funding, students must complete an application form outlining the purpose and scope of the initiative and the funding required. The submission must be endorsed by the Head of School.

Sir Robert Hart Scholarship

Sir Robert Hart Scholarship

  • Are you a Queen’s Graduate?
  • Are you undertaking research or other advanced work of a literary, historical, legal, linguistic, anthropological or sociological nature?
  • Would you like an extra £650 (subject to funds)?

If you answered 'YES' to all 3 questions, you could be in line for a Sir Robert Hart Scholarship.

Preference will be given to applicants whose work is connected with the Far East.

The Scholarship is open to both full-time and part-time postgraduate students.  This Scholarship may be held with any other studentship or scholarship of the University.

Convocation Studentship

This Studentship was established in 2010 by Convocation, Queen's University Belfast to promote the involvement of Convocation in the University and to strengthen ties between the graduate body and Convocation. One studentship, tenable for one year, will be awarded to a maximum value of £2,000 and will normally be awarded annually to one student. The award is not automatically renewable however a student may reapply in consecutive years.

Applicants must be graduates of Queen's University Belfast and eligible to be members of Convocation. Applicants must also already be accepted to study for a postgraduate research qualification (PhD, MSc and MPhil) at Queen's University in any discipline.

The student is open to full-time postgraduate students only. The studentship can only be awarded to an applicant not already holding any other form of award for their postgraduate studies.

Applicants must hold a good honours degree (minimum standard 2.1 or above) and should complete an application form which can be found on the Convocation Studentship Page.

The deadline for 2016 applications was 5pm on 31 August.

The Higginson Leadership Award

The Higginson Leadership Award was founded by a gift in 1954 from Wing-Commander John S Higginson, MA, CBE, OBE, who lived at Ballyward Lodge near Castlewellan in Co Down.  Wing-Commander Higginson was an RAF veteran of the Second World War, whose post-war activities became increasingly philanthropic in nature, focusing in particular on improving services and facilities for the youth of Northern Ireland. Wing-Commander Higginson died in November 2000, but the award has been re-launched by his nephew and heir Andrew Higginson OBE, who has assumed the role of Trustee. Andrew Higginson is Director of Higginson Associates Ltd, London-based Consultants in Conflict Resolution, Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Assistance.

The purpose of the award is to encourage a sense of social responsibility and inspirational leadership among students and alumni of the University, and to support stand alone activities or ventures, rather than extending the students own studies or participation in projects already established by others, which will demonstrate initiative and the ability to inspire or act as a role model for others. Preference will be given to projects or proposals involving developmental or humanitarian aid overseas, in a post-conflict environment.  

Applicants must be enrolled as Queen’s students at the application closing date.

Awards made are normally in the region of £3000.

Students who have received the Higginson Leadership Award in recent years have led teams on projects to build resource centres and help impoverished communities in Romania, Kenya, Bolivia, Thailand, Uganda and Mostar in many interesting and beneficial ways.

This award is normally advertised in November with a closing date for Stage 1 applications in January and Stage 2 applications in March.

Helen Ramsey Turtle Scholarship

University Travel Scholarships

Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Scholarship 
The Scholarships are open to postgraduate students who are enrolled as students for approved courses of study in this University and who intend to travel outside Ireland to undertake a period of research or further education. The award will include full or part payment of the travel and a contribution towards subsistence, up to a maximum award of £650. The Emily Sarah Montgomery Travel Scholarship is tenable with any other award (other than a travelling scholarship or travel grant) of this or any other University.  

Closing dates:
For travel between November – March: October
For travel between April – October: January

Sir Thomas Dixon Travel Scholarship 
The Scholarships are open to undergraduate or postgraduate students of Queen’s University intending to travel outside Britain/Ireland in order to pursue cultural activities abroad. The award may include full or part payment of the travel and a contribution towards subsistence, up to a maximum award of £600.

Closing dates:
For travel between November – March: October
For travel between April – October: January

The First Trust Travel Scholarship 
The Scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate or postgraduate student who intends to travel outside the British Isles in order to extend his or her educational experience. The award will include full or part payment of the travel and a contribution towards subsistence, up to a maximum award of £650. The First Trust Travel Scholarship is not tenable with any other travel scholarship or travel grant.

Please Note: Only one First Trust award is available, so applicants are advised to apply for other awards for which they are eligible.

Ulster Gift Fund Scholarship

Are you, or your parents, serving in HM Forces or have you, or your parents, served in HM Forces?

Are you a Queen’s student, or have you been accepted to enrol on an undergraduate or postgraduate course?

If the answer to both these questions is ‘YES’, you could be in line to receive The Ulster Gift Fund Scholarship. The Scholarship is offered annually and will be to the value of £400.

The Scholarship is open to both full-time and part-time students.

Alan Graham Fund: Travel Scholarship

The Alan Graham Fund was established in 1985 by family, friends and colleagues to honour the memory of Alan Graham who, as an academic in the field of American Studies (1950-1978) and as Secretary to Academic Council (1978-1984), earned widespread respect and affection throughout the University.

The award is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students who intend to pursue a period of study or research in North America. Preference will be given to applicants whose study or research is in the field of American Studies.  The value of the Scholarship will be £800 (subject to available funds).

William and Betty MacQuitty Travel Scholarships

  • Are you a postgraduate student at Queen’s?
  • Have you plans to travel outside Ireland to further your studies?
  • Does your proposed trip demonstrate the principle ‘travel broadens the mind’ OR involve study of global environmental issues?

If the answer to the above questions is YES, you can apply for a William & Betty MacQuitty Travel Scholarship of up to £1,000. An additional prize of £300 may also be awarded for the best travel report.

Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF)

The Canadian Centennial Scholarship Fund (CCSF) provides approximately 16 annual awards ranging from £2,000 to £5,000 to Canadian men and women already pursuing academic and artistic postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. 

Applicants must be currently enrolled full-time in a multi-year postgraduate programme, and at the time of applying be attending a UK university or similar institution, and have completed at least one full-time term of study.  Applicants undertaking a one-year programme are not eligible.

Since 1967 the charity has awarded over £800,000 in scholarships to some 500 talented Canadians studying at over 40 different universities, colleges and conservatories across the UK.  Recipients are chosen on the basis of academic or artistic excellence and their ability to represent Canada in the UK. Awards are granted to scholars from a wide range of disciplines including science, engineering, social science and humanities as well as music, creative arts and design.

Shortlisted applicants must attend in person for interview to be eligible for an award. There are no alternative dates and telephone, video conference/Skype interviews are not permitted.

For 2018-19 scholarships the deadline for applications is 5pm Friday 9th March 2018.

Special Awards             

The CCSF accepts applications from students across all fields of study and those selected for an award are all exceptional. Two named awards are offered on occasion:

  • the Belle Shenkman Award is given to the most impressive student of Music or the Arts;

  • the Mary Le Messurier Award to the most impressive student of History.

Other named scholarships may be available, depending on the wishes of our supporters, all of whom are part of the Canadian community in the UK.






Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences: Santander Mobility Awards (2018/19) - Travel

Queen’s University Belfast is proud to be a member of the prestigious international Santander Universities network. As a member, Queen’s is committed to providing opportunities to students which will develop strong links with key institutions worldwide.

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) is pleased to announce new awards up to £1,000 funded by Santander UK to support international travel and exchange. Open to all postgraduate research students in all AHSS Schools/Institutes. The funds are available for postgraduate research students who wish to travel to key University markets and/or work with strategic partners. Priority will be given to students wishing to visit institutions which are Santander Partner Universities.   For details of these partners click here and select the relevant country and University from the left-hand menu under “Santander Universities”. Previous recipients of Santander Mobility funding can apply again although preference may be given to students who have not yet benefited from this funding source.

The awards are primarily intended to support a postgraduate student during the academic year 2018/19 (including summer period). All funds should normally be committed or spent by 31 July 2019.

Applications will be reviewed initially at School level and a ranked list will be forwarded to the AHSS Faculty for final consideration. Successful applicants will receive notification through the AHSS Faculty Office. Award-holders are responsible for their own travel and visa arrangements and will be required to submit a report to the Faculty which should be e-mailed to Lynda Mahon on within one month from the end of the trip and should include details of the activities carried out and how the funds were spent. The report can be in the form of a written report, blog or video.
