Mark Pengelly, BA Politics, 2006. A little curiosity can go a long way. In my case, it took me to New York.

Having spent three years hiking up and down the Lisburn Road with a stack of papers on my back, I graduated in 2006. Like many graduates (maybe excepting those studying dentistry or medicine) this left me with little idea of what to do next. It would have to be something that satisfied my sense of curiosity, I thought. It also had to be more productive than sitting drinking in the Bunatee – seemingly, my chief occupation at the time.

Fortunately, through work on student radio and elsewhere, journalism presented itself as an opportunity. I spent two subsequent years in London writing for a magazine about finance, a dull subject to many but one I was interested to learn about. At this point, I was asked if I would consider a position in the Big Apple.

Consider it? I nearly leapt out of my chair – whilst trying to feign disinterest, of course. After eight months, the novelty of living in this place still hasn’t worn off. Certainly, moving to another country is no easy task. Working in the US involves the tortuous process of obtaining a visa and social security number. Americans are champions when it comes to bureaucracy – just ask anyone who’s had to check the box marked ‘no’ alongside the question: “Have you ever participated in persecutions directed by the Nazi government?”

Paranoid, I know. Still, if you lived on a continent like this, wouldn't you want to defend it against all comers? The continental United States contains perhaps the most vast, picturesque and under-appreciated landscape anywhere in the world. And I can’t wax lyrical about New York enough. It’s the financial centre of the world and the city that never sleeps. For a financial journalist, what better place to be reporting from during the most calamitous downturn since the Great Depression?

Socialising with contacts is important to my work. So when I’m not sitting in my office overlooking the castle-like New York Fed building, I’m out enjoying a glass or two with contacts in some of the best places in town. Among the most memorable was an after-party several months ago, in a plush hotel room 50 floors above Times Square. Only from there, it didn’t seem like it was real at all, but a plasticine model – and one that left me feeling more than a little elated.

More importantly, it's hard to be stuck for things to do with time off. While I’m loath to admit it, America’s convenience-oriented culture fits me like a glove. Here, it’s been taken to its natural conclusion, which is probably why it’s often said New Yorkers are impatient. Whatever you’re looking for – shopping, nights out, food, culture – you can get it here exactly when you want it. In New York, taxis come at the wave of a hand and sandwiches are slapped together in three minutes – with exactly the right configuration of mayo, mustard, cheese and pastrami to suit your taste.

As a runner, taking a jog around Central Park was a must. I was put up in Manhattan for a month after arriving here, although later decamped to one of Brooklyn’s leafier suburbs. Now, my favoured route takes me down to Coney Island, a piece of real American kitsch and home of one of its oldest wooden roller coasters. My house is close to Park Slope, an arty locale with many first-class pubs, shops and restaurants. It’s just half an hour from downtown Manhattan, and while travelling back on the subway in the evening I can glance out at the sun setting over the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbour.

If I sound enthusiastic about New York, it’s because I am. But living and working internationally isn’t just about one place. Nor is it about tangible benefits, of which I've listed plenty. A greater gain is experiencing life in a different part of the world and another cultural perspective. This is a source of endless fascination and apparently makes you more employable. So if you’ve got curiosity, my advice is: follow it.
