Queen’s alumni were welcomed by Norma Sinte, Queen’s University’s Director of Development, and Honora, wife of Noel Kilkenny, Consul General of Ireland at a reception held in their New York residence.
Norma highlighted developments in Belfast and described recent Queen’s achievements. She spoke about the opportunity for graduates to stay connected with Queen’s through local chapters such as the East Coast branch of the Queen’s Alumni Associations.
She then introduced the evening’s special guest, Paul Muldoon. Paul is a graduate and an honorary graduate of Queen’s who, since 1987, has lived in the United States. He is now Howard G. B. Clark '21 Professor at Princeton University and Chair of the Peter B. Lewis Center for the Arts. In 2007 he was appointed Poetry Editor of The New Yorker. Between 1999 and 2004 he was Professor of Poetry at the University of Oxford, where he is an honorary Fellow of Hertford College. Paul treated guests to a memorable recital of his poetry managing to get attendees to join in with the refrains. Indeed, he was so successful, even Honora’s dog, Trigger, spoke up on cue!
Guests were also invited to explore the spacious penthouse apartment (previously the home of legendary performer, Luther Vandross) and the art collected by Noel and Honora’s during their world travels. Attendees were able to enjoy the refreshments served to them while strolling on the balconies and watching the sun set (through the clouds) over the wonderful views of the New York skyline and the nearby Empire State Building.
